Flakes, The Hub SS2

Flakes’ fluffy croissants, fresh-baked with French flour and butter, form its flagship foundation for a brunch lover’s bevy of warm meals, from creamy scrambled eggs layered with crab meat, fried shallots and smoked paprika aioli (RM22) to a medley of mushrooms, crowned with cauliflower, cheese, a poached egg and roasted tomatoes (RM21) - happy-meal ensembles meant to brighten up any afternoon. For a teatime treat, these yieldingly tender croissants are also available on their own, plain or in flavours such as cinnamon, pistachio, almond or matcha.

The cafe's founders have years of experience that span Kota Kemuning to Melbourne, so their inspirations keep Flakes’ menu engaging enough for every preference.

Fans of Asian flavours can soothe their souls with a modern Ngau Fan, a rice bowl with plenty of peppery, punchy beef and peas, enlivened with pickled daikon, radish and a poached egg (RM19), or seek solace in the Tai Tai On The Beach, a squid-and-prawn pasta made gently, locally aromatic with lemongrass and torch ginger flower, tossed in alcohol-free ale (RM24).

For more elaborate creations that showcase the kitchen’s capable versatility, bring colour to your Flakes experience with the Black Pink, a crisp-skinned, pan-seared slab of salmon with balsamic-tinged slaw and smoked paprika aioli (RM26) or the Double C, a chicken-with-cranberry-sauce concoction that feels like Christmas in October, cushioned with organic black and white quinoa for a balanced lunch (RM23).

With The Beach Boys and a throwback-era soundtrack playing on the speakers, we enjoyed sipping on coolers like the unconventional Blue Choc (RM14; a chocolate beveerage with blueberry and hazelnut syrups) and the Sexy Ching (RM12; a yuzu-based mocktail, fizzy with soda, garnished with lime, rosemary and cili padi).
