Fullhouse Egglet @ Berjaya Times Square

Egglet enthusiasts have a fresh reason to be egg-static: Fullhouse Egglet, which serves its crowd-rousing Hong Kong-inspired waffles at Berjaya Times Square, KLIA2 & Penang's Queensbay Mall, has expanded its selection this month, offering elaborate new recipes to complement its basic, fuss-free varieties. Customers can now munch on egglets topped with everything from tender sausages to creamy mayo crab sticks to hot & rich melted cheese for a complete meal, or take away one of the hearty, multi-flavoured egglets that span the likes of Original, Chocolicious & Charcoal Cheese.

The savoury egglets will satiate patrons who relish large mouthfuls of punchy flavours & textures - think of them as an interesting riff on hot dogs & sandwiches, bursting with saucy appeal (RM8.90 for Cheesy Egglet; RM9.90 for Jumbo Sausage & Crabstick Mayo). But if you prefer to enjoy your egglets the classic way, Fullhouse has you covered too, with warm, fragrant waffles, made to order, the batter capably prepared for a satisfactory chew, bolstered by a choice of dips such as chocolate, maple syrup, peanut butter or cheese (RM5 for the Original; RM6 for Chocolicious & Charcoal Cheese; add RM1 for chocolate chips). Hong Kong-style iced milk tea is available as a beverage add-on (RM2.50). Our thanks to Fullhouse for this sampling.

Arch Cafe @ Central Market & Assam Boy @ Berjaya Times Square

Arch Cafe seems worth visiting for local fare in a contemporary setting if you're near Central Market, especially if the chicken rice balls prove to be a measure of the menu - a well-executed platter, with flavoursome rice, succulent chicken & satisfying dips of garlic-chilli & pounded garlic-ginger (RM12). You'll also find staples like nasi lemak & Hainanese chicken chop, but for seekers of cute novelties, try the Durian Imperial (RM13), an enjoyably creamy cake shaped with thorny spikes, encasing a soft, fluffy centre of fresh durian, cream & vanilla sponge. Durian pancakes, mille-crepes & ais krim potong are available too.

Assam Boy is a colourful & convenient stop if you're catching a movie at Berjaya Times Square, promising the locally inclined likes of Penang laksa, pandan chicken & fried popiah. Some of the more interesting offerings here include a Mee Rebus that tastes somewhat like a strange hybrid of regular mee rebus & curry mee, distinctively dunked with two skewers of chicken satay (RM8.90), & a pretty refreshing Durian Cendol that showcases two fat, fairly fleshy pieces of the King of Fruits (RM9.90).

Room Eighteen @ Berjaya Times Square

A bright, spacious mall outlet with warm service & whopping servings.

The obligatory yee sang was the ideal thing to whet our appetites.

Waxed meat with steamed rice. The salty sausages seemed to be of a reasonable quality, with a sticky sauce that gave a sweet flavour to the rice.

Mini "poon choy." Chinese comfort food at its best; a treasure trove of succulent roast duck, pork & chicken with mushrooms & veggies.

BBQ combo. Not the best in town; the siew yoke was too dry, the duck was mediocre, while the char siew leaned too far toward the fatty side.

Steamed garoupa fillet with bean curd sheets. Not as terrific as an entire fresh garoupa would taste, but decent enough to satisfy any fish cravings.

Poached bean shoots in superior stock. Forgettable.

Prawns with chicken floss. Addictive, thanks to the eggy-tasting floss.

Assorted dim sum. Loved the meaty siew mai & the crisp yam balls.

The fish balls & fried spring rolls were so-so, but the sesame balls were a sweet, sticky treat. Always nice to find a place that serves dim sum in the evening.

Kiku Zakura @ Berjaya Times Square

An outlet hidden in a desolate corner of Berjaya Times Sq, far from prying eyes.

Complimentary fishy appetisers arrived while we were still struggling to make our selections from the massive menu.

Namagaki Sushi (sushi topped with oysters and rolled in cucumber).
I can't recall ever having oysters in such a fashion before. It proved to be a wondrous recipe _ a harmonious marriage of complex ingredients.

Kiku-Zakura Maki (their signature roll, wrapped in salmon and stuffed with prawn tempura and crabsticks). Bigger than rolls elsewhere. Nicely done, though the taste was predictable.

Shake Kama Nabe (a bowl of hot broth with salmon head and veggies). Another hearty serving. Worth ordering for fans of salmon head.

Sawanotsuru cold sake to wash down a surprisingly satisfying meal.

Krispy Kreme @ Berjaya Times Square

We braved the stampede to Krispy Kreme and queued for about 20 minutes to take part in the latest food fad to hit KL.

The kitchen crew seemed to have heaps of fun churning out these much-hyped babies (supposedly they can produce nearly 18,000 everyday).
Bonus points to the staff members who handed free original glazed doughnuts to all the waiting customers.

Finally! Clockwise from top right: the Green Tea Lover, Hershey's Cookies & Cream (our favourite of the bunch!), Chocolate Ice Kreme Filled, Cappuccino Kreme, Hershey's Dark Chocolate and New York Cheese Cake.

The verdict: Krispy Kreme's offerings trump Big Apple and J Co's slightly in terms of taste (especially if you prefer your doughnuts sweeeeeet). We probably won't be returning anytime soon (too sinful!), but we certainly relished each of the doughnuts.

There's a comfortable lounge upstairs where we ended up in sugar shock after scarfing down the six doughnuts in 10 minutes.

Krispy Kreme,
Berjaya Times Square.
