Pak Cik Cafe, Kepong

Transformed from a car workshop into a cool cafe, Pak Cik Cafe is a playful, pleasant stop.

Eighties and nineties kids in the mood for nostalgia will be happy together with Pak Cik Cafe's wall of fame, pasted with portraits of Hong Kong pop icons, from Andy to Anita, Tony to Leslie and Maggie.

Beverages bridge the generation gap between the classic and the contemporary - sip on Milo topped with whipping cream and Pak Cik's own-brewed bottled lychee kombucha.

BeReal Cafe, Kepong

Fresh ingredients from responsible producers, fermented seasonings, fantastic flavours: BeReal is the real deal. Tucked on a shop-house's first floor, converted from a residential space, BeReal lives up to its promise of being a natural kitchen, a remarkable destination not only for the neighbourhood but for everyone who craves honestly sourced, imaginatively conceived and lovingly crafted food.

House-baked sourdough has become a regular sight across the Klang Valley, but BeReal goes a leap further with its own-blended condiments. The bread is respectable, made with organic unbleached, wholemeal and rye flours, raw cane sugar and kefir milk, but the spreads make it shine - umami-rich miso butter, mellow-sweet pumpkin kaya, grainy ricotta in oil with lime zest, and luscious pineapple chilli jam. At RM6.90 per serving with a choice of three condiments, this is a terrific toast board.

Big Breakfasts are also overhauled with a wholesome flourish, served like a stew in a cast-iron skillet, sizzling with a soft kampung egg, chunky house-made bacon (of hormone-free Sanbanto pork) and fleshy-textured pork sausage (with natural hog casing), steamy in a gravy of biodynamic vegetables, including tomatoes, carrots, roast pumpkins and pea shoots, rounded out with lacto-fermented onions and garlic, rich in beneficial bacteria for a healthy gut. Big Breakfasts are too often indulgent calories of processed fare, but BeReal kicks off the day with genuinely nourishing sustenance (RM30.90).

Asian noodle recipes prove soulful and comforting here. Organic brown rice bee hoon is available as the Kerabu Mihoen (RM9.90; packed with local herbs, toasted nuts, dried shrimp, shredded omelette, and a dressing of lime and lemon) and the Siam Laksa (RM13.90; an absolute should-try, with a rustically textured kuah of mackerel fish with budu and fish stock, plus pineapple salsa and vegetables).

Also of note: BeReal seasons its dishes with its own from-scratch shio koji (made with cultured steamed rice) that's meant to marinate, salt and tenderise. The cafe's menu lists its entire roster of suppliers, ranging from certified livestock farms to sustainable vegetable growers to wild-caught fisheries, stressing its cooking is free of pesticides, antibiotics and chemicals.

Desserts and drinks are also intriguingly irresistible, especially at these prices. Nangka butter cake, infused with nangka syrup and topped with Kuala Pilah nangka (RM7.50)? Apple and cabbage cake (RM10.50)? Red yeast chocolate cookies (RM4)? Acacia honey lemon sparkling quenchers (RM9.50? Kefir water with seasonal fruits (RM7.50)? Wheatgrass latte (RM12.50)? An impressive start to a place with immense potential.

BeReal Cafe

44-1, Jalan Burung Pucung, Taman Bukit Maluri, 52100 Kuala Lumpur. Currently open Friday-Wednesday, 9am-5pm. Will open for dinner eventually.

YEES Yogurt Malaysia, United Point Kepong

Promising the whole-milk richness of a genuinely Australian-born brand, YEES is our best bet for yogurt beverages in Malaysia, with a cavalcade of tempting varieties, from purple rice to pistachio.

YEES' first outpost was unveiled last year in Haymarket, Sydney; since embarking into Malaysia this year, the brand has already conquered numerous neighbourhoods, spanning the Klang Valley to Penang and Perak, stretching the entire peninsula from Kedah to Johor.

The latest offshoot of YEES Yogurt Malaysia launched this month, in Kepong's up-and-coming United Point development, less than a 20-minute drive from areas like TTDI and Desa Sri Hartamas. It's a bright, comfortable space, blessed with plenty of sunshine, showcasing colourful, cheerful flourishes that include a charming kid-and-koala mural.

For yogurt enthusiasts, YEES is the real deal, relying on Bright Cow premium milk for its pure, natural offerings - fermented goodness at its most nourishing.

The yogurt beverages here cater to all generations - sweet and tangy, bursting with luscious textures in every slurp-worthy sip. The flavours showcase beloved ingredients in cool, contemporary fashion, perfect for combating our country's heat and humidity.

All beverages are freshly prepared to order, so you can certainly taste their full punch and vitality.

YEES' selection is extensive, whipping up something for everyone.

The Signature Series is the ideal introduction, beginning with the basic Purple Rice Yogurt (RM13.90, in standard servings of about 500ml that are satisfyingly filling, even as sustenance on its own) - this is mixed with grainy greatness, comprising black and white glutinous rice for a beautiful bite.

If you crave nuttiness, check out the Hazelnut and Pistachio Yogurt (RM16.90), brimming with crunchy bits of top-notch nuts that complement the beverage's lusciousness. We also like the Taro Yogurt (RM16.90), which channels the distinctively earthy nuances of taro, and the Oreo Yogurt (RM13.90), with the flavour of chocolate cookies flowing through the drink.

If the refreshing, rejuvenating qualities of fruits are what you seek, there are also lots to choose from, such as the Honeydew Melon Yogurt (RM13.90), Dragon Fruit Yogurt (RM13.90),  Mango Yogurt (RM14.90) and Avocado Yogurt (RM17.90).

We enjoyed how the gentle subtleties of the fruits shone in each beverage - you can certainly taste ripe melons and mangoes blended with the yogurt, creating a harmonious synergy of ingredients.

While yogurt drinks are definitely not for slimming down, since they remain a high-calorie indulgence, they still offer wholesome values, promoting healthy digestion. They're also free of preservatives, artificial flavourings and genetically modified additives.

Other options include playful pleasures like Sweet Potato Yogurt (RM13.90), as well as a Bird's Nest series for traditional beauty-boosting benefits, with each yogurt beverage infused with 30 grams of Penang-cultivated bird's nest and other nutritious components like cranberries or dates.

As a youthful brand, YEES is particularly popular among patrons in their twenties and thirties, many of whom are happy to linger over drinks for hours in YEES' vibrant venues. The brand strives to cater to all Malaysians, with halal yogurt and other ingredients.

Many thanks to YEES Yogurt Malaysia for having us here.

Duddell's, Kepong

Branded as both cheesecake factory and coffee roastery, Duddell's does well as a teatime stop in Kepong: When we visited on a recent Saturday afternoon, there were no fewer than seven varieties of cheesecakes chilling in the cabinet, from the liquor-laced rum-and-raisin cheesecake (RM16.90) to the cottony sofuto cheesecake inspired by the Japanese soft-serve flavour (RM14.90), all pleasantly enjoyable enough to endorse. Beverage choices are also aplenty - have your Irish coffee spiked with both Baileys and whiskey for a naughty-and-nice indulgence (RM18.90), cool down with a Lychee And Green Apple Granita ice-blended (RM15.90) or warm up with Wild Sour Cherry hot tea (RM8).

Duddell's
G7, Residensi Fortune Perdana, Jalan Metro Perdana Barat, Perdana Residence, Kepong, Kuala Lumpur. Open 10am-930pm; closed Wednesdays.
