Sneaky Burgers, Damansara Jaya

Love sneakin' up on you: These might be our favourite pork burgers in PJ, a pleasant surprise hidden in a new first-floor restaurant that's currently only open for takeout and deliveries on safety precautions.

The star ingredient, the house-made pork patty, earns the spotlight - thick and moist, fresh-tasting and meaty-textured, unmistakably porcine, like a cross between a modern burger's chunky patty and a classic Chinese steamed minced pork patty.

We had ours in the Sneaky Mother Porken Burger (RM28.80; the priciest burger here, with the basic pork burger starting at RM9.90), sandwiched not only with the pork patty but a deep-fried chicken thigh, double bacon, double cheese, lettuce, pickled gherkins, caramelised onions and Sneaky sauce (of course, we added an egg too, for RM2).

The result: Pure pork-and-poultry pleasure, more succulence than we can sink our teeth into. With everything going on in this burger, it proved more well-balanced than we might expect. Honest-quality, well-prepared ingredients from top to bottom, from the buns to the meat - let's give 'em something to oink about.

Sneaky Burgers
33A, Jalan Mewah SS22/11, Damansara Jaya, Selangor. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 5pm-10pm. Tel: 010-2144801

Wild Yeast Bakery Cafe, Damansara Jaya

Bassoonist-turned-baker Terence Chong orchestrates a symphony of sourdough at his new cafe, conducting a choir of crusts in sandwiches with names like Smoked Salmon Concerto and Egg Mayo Mushroom Sonata, played in the keys of Beef Minor and Chick Major.

Crisp, densely textured toasts hit the right notes with a reasonably deep tang, harmonised with fillings like chilled prawns with ebiko, wasabi and mustard in the Singing Shrimp (RM23). Open-faced tartines might strike a chord with fans of fromage, jazzed up with heady goat's cheese and honeyed fig jam (RM20). We're even thrilled to trumpet the calamansi juice (RM8), which stays mellowly and melodiously on tune with Wild Yeast's philosophy of honest, homemade comfort.

Wild Yeast Bakery Cafe
15, Jln SS22/11, Damansara Jaya, Selangor. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 930am-5pm. Tel: 016-621-8492

Black Mountain Malaysia

Eyvan Restaurant, Bandar Sri Damansara

The culinary pleasures of Persia unfold at Eyvan, founded by a team of Iranians in Bandar Sri Damansara. Short of taking a trip to Tehran, this might be the ideal introduction to a set of traditional Arabian Gulf recipes not often seen in KL's restaurants.

Start with the spinach borani (RM14), a cold appetiser that's essentially a creamy yogurt dip, a refreshing way to awaken the palate. Pair that with piping-hot ash-e-jow (RM10), a smooth, robust-tasting barley soup, textured with slivers of pulled meat.

Eyvan's food feels both comforting and nourishing: Should-orders include the mirza ghassemi (RM15; grilled eggplant with fried egg), ghormeh sabzi (RM22; the quintessential Iranian stew, thickened with lamb, kidney beans and sauteed parsley and leeks), and baghali polo (RM14; rice with chopped dill). While Iran is a wine-producing nation, Iranian wine is unfortunately not available at Eyvan; thankfully though, various European vintages are, offered by either the glass or the bottle.

Flooded with Oriental flourishes, The Chinatown channels a sense of dramatic intrigue throughout its intricate setting. The menu is wide-ranging, spanning nam yu pork belly to chicken-stuffed baked tau pok - the most interesting offering is the rice steamed and served in bamboo, rich with sweet and savoury slices of Chinese sausages (RM25). While a cocktail list is not formally available, The Chinatown's friendly team will try to oblige requests, with many potions reasonably priced below RM30.
