Alois Dallmayr, Munich

Munich flocks to the sprawling headquarters of Europe's biggest delicatessen business for cold cuts, chocolates, cakes, cheeses and more - even if you're not buying, it's worth browsing at the three-century-old Alois Dallmayr before taking in the sights at the Marienplatz square, preferably from the sky.

Peter & Wolff @ Munich

With a heritage that stretches back over 120 years, Peter & Wolff is a worthwhile stop, very near Munich's central station. The restaurant specialises in calves and cattle reputedly raised in lush German meadows, free of factory farming - the breaded escalope of Bavarian calf, fried in clarified butter, is a thing of beauty, crisply juicy, fresh-tasting and flavoursome.

Ratskeller & Augustiner Beer Halls @ Munich

Roaming the beer halls of Munich: With a history that reputedly dates back to the 19th century, the intricately decorated cellar restaurant of Ratskeller is a popular stop at central Marienplatz square. Specialities include sauerbraten, the classic pot roast marinated in vinegar & red wine with apples, celery & juniper berries, partnered with potato dumplings, pretzels & red cabbage.

Bavarian minced veal lung stew & liver dumpling soup might neither look nor sound exceptionally appetising, but this is gasthaus grub at its tastiest - not a feast for the eyes, but a treat for the taste buds. Down with beer & elderberry brandy.
