Cali's Burger, Bandar Sri Damansara

On a cold, rainy December night, scores of burger buffs huddled under umbrellas beside the Klang Valley's latest burger truck - our burgers were probably a bit wetter, sloppier and messier than usual, but no one seemed to mind, since the Cali's team was doing its best to dish out delicious burgers.

Cali's serves three types of burgers - the Chicken Katsu (with a deep-fried chicken patty, garlic mayo, cheddar, pickles and tomatoes), Beef Burger (with an Australian grain-fed beef patty, cheddar, pickles, tomatoes and onion jam) and Tamago (with a Japanese omelette, nori, house-made mayo, pickles, coleslaw and onions).

Our burgers might not be representative of the typical Cali's experience, since the team served complimentary tamago top-ups with each burger that night. The chicken and beef patties were moist and meaty in the manner of Malaysian street burgers, while the tamago was satisfying even on its own, thick and tender, fresh and warm, sandwiched in a fluffy-soft, buttery bun.

From Casablanca With Love: Food Truck

By Aiman Azri

From Casablanca With Love is a fresh-faced food truck that promises a hot-blooded Moroccan affair; some customers might indeed fall in lust with the Grilled Lamb Couscous (RM 15), spotlighting meat that's loose on the bone, its mild-mannered flavour enlivened by the garlicky-tangy dynamics of truck founder Nik's secret sauce.

Nik, a former professional caterer, believes that Moroccan-inspired cooking is a match for Malaysian palates, courtesy of several relatively familiar-tasting types of spices, mixed in ways that might nonetheless convey a subtly different experience.

For crowd-pleasing street fare, the Beef Kefta Moroccan Kebab Wrap proves a meaty little parcel of happiness, featuring ground beef in flatbread, saturated again with Nik's signature sauce (RM 7).

There's a Malaysian speciality here that should be worth sampling too: The Nasi Kerabu Tumis comes with turmeric-tinged yellow rice coupled with a freshly chopped local salad, completed with ayam bakar, sambal tumis, keropok and telur masin, striving to do justice to the traditional stalls of Kelantan (RM 7).

From Casablanca With Love is typically at Taman Tun Dr Ismail on most nights, but text Nik first at 011-3231-1605 to check.

The Mothership Food Truck

Earthlings in Solaris Mont Kiara may have frantically reported mysterious sightings of this never-before-seen Mothership in recent weeks; fear not, the invaders come in peace, bearing their own interpretations of hot dogs & sandwiches - the Po Dawg is particularly playful, with a 'sausage' of pulled chicken stuffed in crispy-fried popiah skin, topped with caramelised onions, cucumber, BBQ sauce & garlic mayo (RM12). Also suitable for a hot, dirty-your-fingers dinner: Commander Kim comprises a pressed-like-panini baguette with Korean inflections of bulgogi-marinated striploin & kimchi, plus melted mild cheddar (RM15).

Oishii Onigiri & Laksa Beras Food Trucks

Roaming Damansara Heights, Ampang, Petaling Jaya & beyond, this Japanese food truck offers everything from takoyaki to bentos & donburi, but true to its name, it's chief offering is onigiri. You'll find at least four types of rice balls at any given time here, with fillings that range from salmon, eel, scallops, sesame chicken & crab sticks to mashed potatoes, sweet corn & egg mayo. We tried the ebiko, filled with lots of crunchy shrimp roe (RM4 for one, RM10 for three). The tamago mentai might also be worth investigating if you ever spot this bright-coloured vehicle - soft, warm omelette strips, cooked to order, topped with a creamy layer of intensely savoury pollock roe (RM6.90).

Scratch that itch for a lightly tangy, aromatic assam laksa, served fresh & hot for only RM4.50, at the Laksa Beras food truck, parked beside Menara Binjai, a short stroll from the Ampang Park LRT station, operating most weekdays, 4pm through 8pm.
