Breathing Space, Petaling Jaya

Waiting to exhale? Come up for air, ales and espressos at Breathing Space, PJ’s new model of minimalism, poised to be a major magnet for cafe pursuers.

Breathing Space’s founder offers stark relief with a soothing setting that brings together her favourite furnishing. On a mellow Friday morning, the voices of African vocalists Christy Essien-Igbokwe and Tabu Ley Rochereau waft from the speakers as the final vestige of daybreak’s sunlight dances on the ceiling.

Eight a.m. is an excellent time for an espresso tonic to perk you up, but it isn’t too early to crack open a craft beer either. Ensure a sweet escape with a slice of Gula Melaka chiffon before venturing back out into the big, bad world.

Breathing Space
135A, Jalan SS2/6, SS2 Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Open Friday-Sunday, 8am-10pm; Monday-Thursday, 8am-5pm.

Rhythm Specialty Coffee Bar, Petaling Jaya

Returning to the rhythm of the ristretto, veteran Malaysian barista Cheryl Lee recently launched Petaling Jaya’s latest hidden coffee bar, tiny and cosy, bright and white, sunshine-laden and leaf-loving.

Rhythm’s coffee is fragrantly satisfying, the hallmark of a polished professional. The fresh-every-morning desserts are deliciously conceived, from the jasmine green tea chiffon, pillowy and aromatic, made extra-textured with almonds and extra-tasty with coffee caramel sauce (RM10), to crunchy-creamy blueberry cheese tarts layered with juicy berries over a jammy bottom (RM13).

Rhythm Specialty Coffee Bar

Pinnacle Kelana Jaya, Jalan SS 7/26, SS7, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Open Tuesday-Saturday, 830am-530pm. Tel:  012-791-3054
