Luck be a latte done right: Bukit Bintang's latest boutique hotel boasts a beautiful coffee bar, blessed with a modest courtyard that's a calm cocoon from KL's cosmopolitan chaos. KLoé Hotel's hospitality is founded on the philosophy of the kindness of strangers, and Lucky Coffee Bar certainly takes that principle to heart, with one of the city centre's warmest crews.
Sandwiches and salads might sound stereotypical, but Lucky Coffee Bar pours plenty of skill and sensibility into its efforts. Its take on the Reuben sandwich is a triumph, thick and tender, plumply packed with pastrami, pickled red onions, whole-grain honey mustard and Emmental cheese in crisply buttery brioche slices, forcefully flavoursome, served fresh and warm (RM28).
Mixed greens tossed with sourdough croutons and a soft egg make for a reviving lunch, zesty with rocket leaves, sweet basil and snap peas in a light, mild maple-and-mustard dressing (RM20).
Denmark's beloved dream cake is our best bet for a Lucky teatime treat, a dense vanilla-scented cake with its signature topping of caramelised coconut; the Basque Country is also represented by the now-ubiquitous burnt cheesecake - Lucky's is laced with gula Melaka, enjoyable albeit identical-tasting to most others in KL. Thankfully, the coffee doesn't disappoint either.
