Perched on the ninth floor of Pavilion Elite, with a bird's-eye view of Bukit Bintang's streets, Cloud 9 floats to fine heights, exuding a sense of stylish elegance seldom seen in malls. With a veteran Italian chef currently commanding the kitchen, the European-accented menu also shoots for the skies, offering a confidently upscale option for customers seeking a polished dining experience in the city centre.
Cloud 9 opens at three p.m. everyday, the perfect time for tea - the restaurant's Hi-Tea Set promises plenty of finger fare for two persons - tuna and cucumber sandwiches, chicken mushroom pies, smoked salmon tartine, macarons, vanilla and chocolate pound cakes, burnt vanilla custard, and house-baked scones with butter, jam and loads of clotted cream. It's an appealingly colourful, heartily portioned spread, filled with all the fundamental high-tea favourites, completed with a pot of piping-hot, fragrant tea. If you feel like going all out, order a bottle of Champagne to complement the feast. The Hi-Tea Set is scheduled to launch starting 13 September.
When the evening falls, the kitchen rises to the occasion with a repertoire of exquisitely plated creations - fans of seafood might start with the 'umai,' a ceviche-like take on marinated Sarawak-sourced sea perch, layered with avocado and crispy tortilla 'hair' for a textured temptation (RM42), while folks searching for French inspirations should check out the foie gras torchon, sumptuously creamy, contrasted with crispy duck ham and fruity plum paste, thickly resting atop toasted brioche with black truffle for an earthy boost (RM73).
Main courses include intriguing possibilities like iberico lamb leg, straight from Spain, slow-roasted to secure its tenderness, yielding a concentrated intensity of flavour that's unmistakably lamb, balanced with lemon-scented mashed potatoes, tomato confit, basil oil and lamb jus (RM98), and poached white pomfret fillet, a delicately clean-tasting fish that's suitably partnered with sauteed kuchai chives and Arenkha smoked herring caviar (RM89).
For dessert, the can't-fail order is the chocolate ganache, indulgently nuanced in its complexities, buoyed by mint sauce and fresh fruits (RM22). If the night is still young by the time dinner is over, adjourn to the adjacent lounge beside the dining room, keeping the spirits high with more panoramic views and drinks galore.
Many thanks to Cloud 9 for this evening's escapade.
