Zhen Shan Mei @ SohoKL

Taiwanese fine dining has come to town, with the brand-new Zhen Shan Mei offering a multitude of creatively conceived, painstakingly prepared recipes.

Foie gras in mochi skin roulades and mullet roe rolls. Just when we thought there could be no novel way of serving foie gras, this knocked our socks off; the cold foie terrine was a melt-in-the-mouth treat that combined perfectly with the slightly sweet, chewy mochi. Next to that, the fish egg rolls paled in comparison, though mullet roe is always a pleasure.

Succulent smoked goose & scallops with salmon roe helped to whet our appetites.

Fresh abalone complemented by an aromatic, subtly sour five-flavour sauce.

Scallop & prawn dumplings topped with truffles. This had all the attributes of superlative dim sum; plump, piping-hot, moist morsels stuffed with sensationally fresh ingredients.

Cold Hefeng-style stewed matsuzaka pork shoulder. A hearty serving of tender meat, though not particularly memorable. A bit bland, though that might have been intentional.

Supposedly a popular Taiwanese treat called "Keelung Miaokou," this deep-fried pork roll was like a version of lor bak, without any trace of excess oil.

Crispy "pomegranate" stuffed with scallop, prawn, squid & chicken. Expertly executed, but not exactly exceptional. Still, like nearly everything else here, it proved to be fun to eat.

Pork liver pan-fried with Taiwanese soya sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds. I've loved pig's liver ever since I was a kid, so it's something I still order whenever it's on the menu. This version was wonderfully juicy, with the strong liver flavour somehow toned down.

Silver cod steamed with Taiwanese cordia seeds. The fish was fresh and tasty, but the seeds seemed like an unnecessary distraction, since they were too hard and had to be spat out.

Placido Chianti DOCG, ordered over from their nearby affiliate, Michelangelo's.

Espressamente Illy @ Bangsar Village

Espressamente Illy's appearance is deceiving; it may look like a simple food kiosk at Bangsar Village, but it serves some excellent cocktails too.

Pate Pomodoro (sundried tomato pate with bread). The pate was pretty flavourful; too bad the bread was plainly run-of-the-mill.

Vegetarian al pollo (Italian omelette with chicken, mushrooms, cheese and spinach). A thick slab of egg that almost tasted freshly whipped up.

Arancini (Sicilian rice ball with beef ragu and mozzarella filling). Could have been better. The batter was perfect but the rice inside was all dried out.

Piadina Rinforzi (Italian flat bread rolled with roast beef, gorgonzola blue cheese, baby spinach and caramelized onion spread). We rarely order sandwich-like stuff, but this was worth it. The warm slices of beef were fork-tender and went well with the other stuffings.

Spaghetti Al Tonno, with tuna, capers, anchovies and kalamata olives in tomato-based sauce. We were skeptical about this, since we're not big fans of tuna or tomato sauces. But it was another pleasant surprise; the tuna wasn't fishy and the sauce wasn't too sour.

Red Velvet. Skip this; you'll find a better version downstairs at The Daily Grind.

Alcohol-based Gelatos (Cointreau & Orange and Crunch & Rum). Very nice.

Sgroppino Limone (lemon sorbet, prosecco, limoncello) & Spritz Aperol (aperol, prosecco, soda). The range of alcohol here is darn impressive.

Choko (chocolate ice cream-based cocktail with coffee liqueur) and Vodka Espresso (vodka & kahlua shaken with ice and liquid sugar).

Providore @ Solaris Mont Kiara

One of the initial outlets to open at Solaris Mont Kiara, Providore's survival is a testament to the quality of its offerings (though admittedly, the food was better back in the early days).

Open Pork Burger with bacon & egg. Humongous enough to be shared by two, with loads of flavoursome toppings to go with the thick pork patty.

Mafalde with lamb ragu. Lamb lovers, order this without hesitation; the pasta is tossed with generous portions of tender lamb slices in a comforting tomato-based sauce.

Roast pork belly with coleslaw and caramelized apple. The meat was slightly too dry, but still satisfactory if you have a longing for crispy pork belly.

Goji berry juice & raw organic hot chocolate (Peruvian cacao with Mexican Agave syrup).

Pacifica: MIGF & More @ Mandarin Oriental Hotel

Click here for previous review of Pacifica (April 27).
The MIGF menu here costs RM 295++ without wine _ pricey but justifiable.

Wholesome warm bread with fresh tuna, Echire butter & passionfruit butter.

Amuse bouche: prawn tomato crostini, carrot vanilla confit, ginger mousse.

Poached lobster in lobster oil, avocado, apple and cucumber salsa. The lobster was impeccable, but we had mixed feelings about the salsa, which tasted weirdly like grass!

Brown butter salmon, beetroot hazelnut salad, cardamom, pineapple and liquorice reduction. Another offbeat recipe, though this one worked. The beetroot hazelnut salad tasted like Ferrero Rocher chocolate, but blended magnificently with the succulent salmon.

Monkfish with truffled fava bean cassoulet, red onion and Madeira broth. Not bad, but not really memorable. We're still learning how to recognize monkfish, but we like it so far.

Scallop raviolo, sauce vierge, sea beans and broccolini. The raviolo was stuffed with sensationally soft scallop mousse that turned this into the best kind of comfort food.

Lamb loin and confit 'gremolata' potato gratin dauphinois and baked garlic. We weren't craving any meat in our meal, but this was a real carnivore's delight. Tender, flavourful lamb, which proved that this restaurant's meat dishes are as brilliant as its seafood.

Fondue of Epoisse with spiced peach, chanterelles and lemon verbena. Cheese-lovers will relish this complex spread, while others should stay away.

Albaco ganache & candied apples on olive oil sponge & apple sorbet. The sole letdown on their MIGF menu, partly because the sponge cake was all dried out.

Complimentary chocolates, pralines and macarons. No complaints here.

We also ordered items from the regular a la carte menu. The Australian swordfish crudos with truffle jus and black olive oil tasted as fresh as possible.

Oyster soup, romaine lettuce & nicola fondant potato. Creamy & piping-hot.

Orvieto Classico D.O.C. Ruffino, Umbria, Tuscany (Italy) and Sauvignon Blanc, Anakena, Rapel Valley (Chile).

Cousin Toro's @ Asian Heritage Row

October has been an impressive time for new restaurants. So far, we've fallen head over heels for Teeq at Lot 10, L'Heritage at Royale Chulan, High Tide at Menara Taipan, Weissbrau at Pavilion, and now, Cousin Toro's at Asian Heritage Row. Three more promising outlets are slated to open elsewhere before the month ends, so it'll be a busy period next week.

If you crave chimichangas, burritos or tacos, head to Cousin Toro's for surprisingly satisfying Tex-Mex servings. It's a cosy place with warm service and affordable food, but its long-term survival is questionable, since so many other Heritage Row outlets have closed.

Chile con Queso, a creamy dip that blends cheese with peppers, accompanied by flour chips. Absolutely addictive, but catastrophically calorie-laden.

Crumbed zucchini with Mazatlan mushroom sauce. Crispy but a tad too oily.

Chili con carne (ground beef & kidney beans). Nicely done; rich & flavoursome.

Tampico Taco (corn taco shell loaded with seasoned chicken, diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce & grated cheddar cheese). A major bonus is that the ingredients in these dishes taste really fresh.

A hearty portion of house specialty fajitas _ marinated steak strips sauteed in butter with julienned capsicum and onions, then served on a sizzling skillet with Mexican rice, refried beans, pico de gallo, fresh sour cream, guacamole and buttered tortillas.

Mexican Flag, comprising red, white and green enchiladas, filled with beef and smothered with sauces and cheese. Tex-Mex comfort food at its best.

Screwdriver (vodka and orange juice) & Margarita. Pretty potent drinks.
