Sam's Kitchen, Bangsar

Now in his late sixties, Palanisamy “Sam” Muthusamy’s love for cooking began before he was a teenager, but his path in life took him in different directions for work for many decades, from driving a cab to delivering claypots. Now, he’s where he wants to be, making meals with his wife for friends and strangers at his own-run kitchen in the publicly accessible clubhouse of Bangsar’s Bayu Angkasa condo.

Lunchtime is all about banana leaf rice, from noon through possibly past four (depending on demand). The whole shebang costs RM7.50 for Indian imported rice with daily-changing vegetables (comforting), splashes of chicken and fish curries (rich and robust), chunky-thick dal and potently resonant rasam.

There’s more - on a recent Thursday afternoon, we feasted on kampung mutton and kampung chicken, prepared not only in recipes like peratal and varuval but in parts, such as mutton liver and mutton head. On selected days, most typically Friday and Sunday, deer meat and turkey might also be available, as well as ghee rice, biryani and tomato rice, served by Sam himself, who’ll be happy to chat with customers who want to know more about his passion.
