Fluffed Dessert Bar @ Taman Paramount, Bakeology @ Taman SEA & Sweet Palate @ Nexus Bangsar South

Fluffed tries to take customers on an exploration of crowd-pleasing desserts, from a signature strawberry 'cloudcake' (RM11, a moist sponge cake) to crisp waffles with fanciful monikers like Pooh Bear's Favourite, The Monkey King, or Jack & The Beanstalk (RM19; topped with green tea ice cream, adzuki beans, almond pralines, honey & strawberries). The cafe makes much of its fare in its kitchen, including ice cream with flavours such as macadamia crumble, strawberry cheesecake, lavender blueberry & hokey pokey honeycomb (RM7-RM8 each), the last of which is dunked into Fluffed's affogato (RM13). The cafe is now in its soft-launch stage; its founders say their core philosophy is 'simplicity made perfect,' but it could be interesting to watch how Fluffed evolves, with the possibility that it might come up with creations that leave a more pronounced impression.

Fluffed Cafe & Dessert Bar
55, Jalan 20/7, Taman Paramount, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Tues-Sun, 12pm-10pm. Tel: 03-7865-1833

Bakeology maintains a low profile in Taman SEA, but this friendly cafe, run by sisters Cheryl & Caryn, is well worth a visit. Try one of the distinctive cakes, clearly made with both heart & thought - the Giddy Munky (RM13.50 per slice) turned out to be a banana walnut cake tinged with Bacardi rum, pleasingly mellow in its well-tuned flavours & textures. We were also tempted by Bakeology's twists on conventional cakes - its red velvet is lined with yoghurt, while its cheesecake boasts a speculoos biscuit base. You'll also find other freshly baked treats like lamb pies & croissants, but be sure to pick up a beetroot-thyme loaf - lovely bread, enjoyable entirely on its own. Savoury meals are available too, from rosemary chicken pasta to turkey ham sandwiches.

Bakeology Bakery Cafe
49 Jalan SS23/15, Taman SEA, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Mon-Sat, 8am-6pm

Desserts are also the name of the game at Sweet Palate, an oasis of calm in Bangsar South - the focus is on cakes, with familiar classics that point to something-for-everyone aspirations: carrot cakes (RM12 per slice, laced with cinnamon, walnuts & pineapples), chocolate caramel cakes (RM12), red velvets (RM12) & blueberry sourcream cheese cakes (RM13) crown the menu. You'll also find butter cakes (RM4 a slice), madeleines (RM3 for two) & eclairs (RM3) to complement caps & flat whites.

Sweet Palate
Unit 2-6, Level 2, Nexus Bangsar South. Daily, 10am-10pm. Tel: 03-2242-3299

Cocktail Trail KL @ HEXA Lounge, Bandar Sunway

HEXA Lounge takes cocktails to a different level - mixologist Kelvin Lee experiments boldly with East Asian elements in his one-of-a-kind potions, employing curious components that range from Chinese bakkwa-like bacon to Japanese flying fish roe.

HEXA Lounge is discreetly located outside the Grand Imperial Chinese restaurant in Bandar Sunway's Pinnacle Annexe; both Grand Imperial & HEXA are under the same ownership, which partly explains why the Orient's influence is obvious in pleasingly mellow concoctions like the Jade Of Thousand Layers, with a teacup of ginseng-infused Pu'er tea with Tanqueray 10, Dom Benedictine & chrysanthemum syrup, served with pandan jelly (RM30+) & the Flaming Jade, which marries sake with absinthe, honey, lemon juice & fire-torched rosemary (RM35+).

Kelvin enjoys inventing savoury cocktails; be sure to order the Silk Road (RM45+), with whisky infused for eight hours with bacon oil, mingling with honey, lemon & balsamic vinegar, adorned with a bacon-wrapped strawberry & basil - it has no right being delicious, but it is. Kelvin pledges that more of such crazy cocktails will be available eventually, including one that can be paired with Grand Imperial's coveted siu yok.

The Duck L'Orange is another witty enterprise - gin infused with duck oil, combined with Cointreau, orange juice, soy sauce & egg white, topped with more bacon. Certainly an acquired taste, especially for patrons used to sweet/sour/bitter stereotypes.

Warm, dry sake & Kwai Feh lychee liquor, poured over into shots of tobiko flying fish roe (!) - this is an off-menu item, but it's worth requesting it if you're looking for a cocktail with a wholly unique flavour (it tastes like something you'd drink on a dare) & a texture you can chew on. Note however that Kelvin will be away in Amsterdam next week, so head to HEXA this week or after mid-November if you'd like to try this one. HEXA remains open while Kelvin's gone, as his proteges will take over, but not everything will be available.

HEXA Lounge is part of Cocktail Trail KL, an interesting initiative that involves six of the Klang Valley's most respected cocktail bars - Bandar Sunway's HEXA Lounge, Damansara Uptown's Lou Shang Bar, 44 Pop-Up Bar (currently at Bangsar's DR.Inc), Empire Damansara's The Bar Kinugawa, Desa Sri Hartamas' P&C, &  Damansara Uptown's Hyde At 53M. Basically, customers can pick up a Cocktail Trail KL card at the first outlet they visit this month, purchase a cocktail at each of the six outlets, & redeem a complimentary cocktail at the outlet they started at. The offer is currently valid throughout November only.

HEXA Lounge
Suite 1-01 , First Floor, The Pinnacle Annexe, Persiaran Lagoon Bandar Sunway.
Daily, 5pm-1am. Tel: 03-5888-7221 (Grand Imperial)

Mr. Wolf @ Taman SEA, Petaling Jaya

Mr. Wolf howls into PJ this month: Helmed with ferocious flair by young chef Bryan Tan & his Wolfpack, this is a haven for ambitious & adventurous cooking, tackling Asian-accented tapas & other contemporary creations that convey forceful flavours.

Mr Wolf comprises a street-level restaurant & first-floor bar - it's worth stopping upstairs before or after dinner to sample the bar snacks, which go far beyond the ordinary. We love the crunchy pork skin 'nachos' embellished with a sweet-savoury, meaty mix of beef bolognese, sriracha mayo & cucumber salad (RM16), the deep-fried pig's ears, a crisply addictive treat with streaky bacon (RM18), the squid surimi strips, served cold with morsels of salted duck egg yolk & teriyaki vinaigrette (RM20) & the soft-shell crab sliders, Tiger-beer-battered & complemented by kimchi mayo & caramelised onions (RM12). Each is deliciously imaginative, supplying a pleasant surprise with the first bite & pure satisfaction with every subsequent mouthful.

The restaurant isn't afraid of bold combinations - citrus-cured salmon carpaccio with pickled daikon, yuzu shoyu & avruga caviar would be safe & crowd-pleasing, but Mr. Wolf adds a memorable dimension of robust Southeast Asian dynamics to this recipe with bunga kantan prawn tartare (RM32). For your main course, some equally engaging concoctions might compete for your attention: Braised ox tongue with Thai red curry, sweet potato & grilled eggplant (RM32; lovely comfort food) & sous-vide miso pork loin with crackling, creamy soft-boiled eggs, apple coleslaw & black vinegar caramel (RM32; beautifully executed).

Mr. Wolf's pastas are not as show-stopping, though the spaghetti bolognese is still a notch above average, thick with tender oxtail & beef, plus parmesan cheese & truffle oil (RM36). But we'd probably skip the crab ravioli (RM32), since its filling falls short of the luscious crustacean fleshiness that we're hoping for. It comes with tasty accompaniments though - deep-fried calamari & a salad of pickled mango & papaya in a light coconut broth. Desserts are also not Mr. Wolf's forte for now: Both the sous-vide creme brulee with candied pistachios & fresh berries (RM20) & the date pudding with Gula Melaka sauce & salted caramel ice cream (RM18) were less rich & more conventional than their descriptions might suggest - they're enjoyable enough, but not as compelling as Mr. Wolf's entrees. Still, there are sufficient triumphs here to rank Mr. Wolf as one of PJ's best new restaurants. Wine is available, as are well-made cocktails at welcome prices (the Seductive Hound above is RM18).
