89kilos Cake Bar, Desa ParkCity

Livin’ the buttercream dream: First born in Johor Bahru, 89kilos Cake Bar opens its ovens in KL this month, bringing up a bevy of butter sponge beauties, moist and modernised with lusciously flavoured buttercream layers.

Friendly founders Frank and Alan are now welcoming patrons to this bright, two-level space in Desa ParkCity with playful personal touches like a Harry Potter corner (Frank is a passionate fan), perfectly set under the stairs.

Ten points to 89kilos - these are cakes worth destroying a diet for, rich but not cloying or overly sweet, crafted with enough heart and skill to make each forkful potently, pleasurably addictive.

If you enjoy digging into a slice of cake even before lunchtime, 89kilos has several scrumptious varieties (RM15-RM16) ready as early as 9am.

The Victoria Sponge is fluffy and fit for a royal tea, lined with whipped mascarpone cream and home-cooked berry coulis, the Pistachio Rose brings together the nutty and the floral, a pistachio cake with fragrant rose buttercream, and the Salted Pecan is an American-inspired pecan cake with just the right helping of salted caramel and toasted pecan buttercream.

Everything is baked fresh, with more potential highlights like lemon cake with lemon curd buttercream and Earl Grey cake with Nutella buttercream to emerge throughout the day.

While 89kilos is currently closed in JB because of interstate travel curbs, it has nurtured a loyal following in the southern city and hopes to relaunch there next year.
