Woobar @ W Kuala Lumpur

Crafty cocktails steal the show at W Kuala Lumpur's Woobar lobby lounge: The Alor Treasure Chest pays homage to the roasted chestnuts of KL's Jalan Alor, sneakily packed in a paper bag that's ripped open to reveal a cocktail in a treasure chest - rhum agricole, chestnut-infused Campari, blood orange and shiitake, with real roasted chestnuts on the side (RM50).

Also nutty but nice: Witty Wonka, blending macadamia-infused bourbon and sweet vermouth with Oompa Loompa-loving chocolate bitters (RM50). Playful stuff for a fun evening.

Try a trio of tapas (RM95 in total): Wagyu beef satay, freshly shucked oysters, and five-spice duck confit tacos with chilli-corn salsa, showcasing influences both foreign and domestic.

Hogan Bakery Malaysia: 2018 Mooncakes

By Aiman Azri

Hopping onto our plates this Mid-Autumn Festival, Hogan Bakery's Moon Rabbit collection of mooncakes is offered in charming box sets that should cheer the spirits of everyone who's young at heart.

The mooncakes, crafted in small batches with fresh ingredients, are available in three different sets, each featuring two flavours.

Hogan Bakery's Mooncake Set 2 (RM39.90) comprises the Classic Select (the signature single egg yolk mooncake made with lotus seeds and melon seeds, baked with aromatic peanut oil, resulting in a textured creation with a slight crunch) and the Golden Gem (a lotus paste mooncake with a salted egg yolk custard core, creamy and pleasurably sweet-savoury).

Set 3 (RM35.90) brings a splash of extra colour with the Red Treasure (a classic red bean paste mooncake cooked with rose sugar, supplying a floral fragrance) and the Emerald Fortune (welding together subtle nuances of matcha with potent notes of coffee, indulgently balanced out with a cheese blend at its centre for a distinctive delight).

While we didn't try Set 1 (RM39.90), it also contains the Classic Select as well as the Local Couture, a pandan lotus seed mooncake.

If you purchase two boxes, you'll receive a RM5 Hogan Bakery gift voucher; alternatively, purchase four boxes to receive a RM15 voucher.

Hogan Bakery Mooncakes are available at:
Pavilion
Lion Office Tower
Bukit Bintang sidewalk
Jaya Shopping Centre
IOI City Mall

Bar Shake @ Platinum Park

KL's favourite Japanese bartender is back, working his magic in the city centre. Formerly of Empire Damansara's The Bar Kinugawa, the affable Sam Kinugawa now holds court at the sleek, shadowy Bar Shake on Persiaran KLCC. His Smoky Martini (RM48) brings stylish showmanship to a sultry cocktail, while the Truffle Martini (RM58) is finely balanced with aromatic earthiness, but our guilty indulgence is Sam's fruit sakes (RM45) - if it's in season, try the mangosteen-infused sake, with gorgeously natural notes of one of our favourite fruits.

Level Two, Tower 1, Platinum Park, Persiaran KLCC, 50088 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Masale Twist @ Damansara Uptown

Offering a distinctive take on Indian fare, Masale Twist's menu is inspired mainly by the cuisine of India's southwestern port city of Mangalore. The mother of Masale Twist's Malaysian founder, Fay D'Cruz, was originally from Mangalore, so this restaurant is lovingly rooted in their family's heritage.

Check out a couple of ghee-cooked specialities - the chicken ghee roast is an aromatically robust recipe (RM16), while the tenggiri fish ghee curry is creamy with a pleasant tang (RM20), both showcasing their own spice mixes that are meant to represent the culinary traditions of Mangalore. Pair them with basmati rice served with fried vegetables (RM3).

If you prefer a meatless meal, the sweet potato curry is a should-try; it's comfort food that hits the spot in a rich, reassuring fashion (RM12). Complete your order with some atta naan (RM10) and a glass of wine or two (RM20 each).

Masale Twist
33, Jalan SS 21/56b, Damansara Utama, 47400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. Daily, 12pm-11pm. Tel: 019-250-9347

Prir Frakkar @ Reykjavik, Iceland

This welcoming family-run restaurant has been serving Icelandic specialities since 1989, promising produce from land and sea, including smoked puffin, raw whale and tenderly cooked cod tongue.
