Playground The Cafe, Mont Kiara

With a bustling play space for children, this venue might seem like the ultimate family-friendly cafe in Mont Kiara, but it also seeks to be a playground for the palate: Nutrition-conscious customers may target the Chocolate Goji, thickly but naturally sweet with 200 calories worth of raw cacao, goji berries, hazelnuts, flax, oats, dates, bananas and strawberries (RM14.50), while snackers might find the flaky Chicken Mushroom Pie (RM8.90) and the Double Cheese Melt warm sandwich (RM13.90) perfectly serviceable for a light lunch. Wash down with the colourful cool of a Blue Pea Latte with honey (RM12.90) or Matcha Latte with sugar syrup on the side (RM15.90).

Housekeeping notes: The venue's play area takes up about half of its indoor space. Admission is free for children below 12 months old or RM25 for older ones between one to five years of age. A 40 percent discount can be enjoyed off the admission with the purchase of one food item and one drink.

Cafe Beside You, Petaling Jaya

Cafe Beside You seeks to evoke the comfort of companionship through warm, nourishing bowls of rice and noodles - the former comes crowned with possibilities including shredded chicken with mentaiko sauce (RM12 for a large serving with egg) or unagi with cucumber (RM15 with egg); the latter showcases wholesome preparations such as organic brown rice noodles with scallops and tamago (RM13.50) and udon with prawn and mushroom in lightly spicy soup (RM13), pretty fairly priced fare for a fuss-free meal with clear Japanese influences.

Drinks display several distinctive touches - the Lemonrado is a lemonade with rich depth, strengthened by lime juice and sugar syrup (RM13), while the Super Coca-Cola is also ultra-refreshing, rounded out with a subtle chocolate smoothness (RM11).

The non-alcoholic Coffee Beer is like a bittersweet cross between an iced espresso and a root beer (RM11), while Mr. Coffee & Ms. Earl Grey is a tea-and-coffee marriage of Earl Grey-infused milk with a large coffee ice cube that slowly seeps into the milk (RM12). If you prefer your coffee neat, very pleasant single-origin hand-pours are available.
