Missing Marbles & Buku Tiga Lima @ Ipoh

A fair share of Ipoh’s cafes refuse to coast simply on superficial charm alone, making sure their menu also exceeds expectations. The most ambitious of these are two businesses situated side-by-side in Ipoh’s Old Town enclave.

Missing Marbles explores Asian recipes with contemporary twists ...

... such as soy-braised lamb ribs coupled with calrose rice and sakura leaves ...

... as well as a luscious dessert of lychee fruit with custard and vanilla ice cream.

Next door, Buku Tiga Lima invites customers to linger beneath a ceiling adorned with quirkily colourful lamp-shades ...

... while savouring triumphant temptations such as bagels stuffed with ingredients including foie gras, smoked duck, soft eggs and ricotta cheese.

Fans of Buku Tiga Lima also swear by the calorie-laden crepes here, crowned with the likes of Mars chocolate bar chunks, mascarpone cheese and hibiscus curd.

The text of this review first appeared in the April issue of Going Places, the in-flight magazine of Malaysia Airlines.

Spacebar Coffee @ Awesome Canteen & The Roast Things @ Aman Suria

They can't stay still in one place, but they sure can make a mean cup of coffee: Two of Malaysia's pivotal cafe-hoppers have reinvented themselves to become roving baristas, launching a pop-up brew bar that'll perk up the Klang Valley's cafe experience. Summon them if your friendly neighbourhood cafe needs an invigorating shot of top-flight caffeine & has a corner to spare.

The Spacebar Coffee enterprise marks the latest twist in the tale of bean-whisperers Joachim Leong & Tze Shean Tan, the life force of the Cafe Hop KL community. The two might also be familiar faces for fans of VCR, having formed part of that cafe's earliest team of baristas. This year, they bade farewell to VCR & sought adventures abroad, criss-crossing multiple continents & taking inspiration from cafes & fellow coffee-lovers from as far as Mexico, the UK, Taiwan & Japan.

Now that Jo & Shean are back in business, Taman Paramount's Awesome Canteen is hosting their work with Spacebar Coffee this week & next week, only on Thursdays & Fridays, 12pm-4pm (that's every afternoon on July 4, 10 & 11). Stafford, UK-based roaster Has Bean Coffee provides the poison, served black, hot or cold, for filter coffee hand-crafted on AeroPress or Chemex.

Nicaragua Finca Limoncello, pretty light, with toasty, nutty (walnuts? peanuts? pecans?) riffs. A real palate-cleanser for everyone who feels they've been plagued by bad coffee everywhere they turn (it's true, the Curse of Cruddy Cappuccino is real).

Ready for a refill? Bolivian Cascara coffee cherry tea, another bona fide antidote for coffee-weariness, casting aside acidic tropes to flirt with plummy flavours. Not exactly bold, but enjoyably & elegantly resonant.

Spacebar Coffee furnishes a compelling purpose for customers to return to Awesome Canteen this month, but there's a whole swathe of reasons why this cafe has blossomed so unstoppably into one of PJ's most beloved; it's one of our best bets for food prepared with wit & wisdom.
Earlier entry on Awesome Canteen: November 2013.

Awesome Canteen's pioneering Paleo selection has become one of its star attractions; even those of us not on the hunter-gatherer diet can appreciate the distinctive deliciousness of something like this 'Paleo Egg Plant Niku Stack' (RM27.90), a sterling substitute for regular burgers, constructed with a 130-gram beef or chicken patty & sunny-side-up, wedged between thick, juicy slices of eggplant & paired with chunky sweet potato fries.

Paleo Smoothies? Bananas blended with steamed broccoli & a raw egg might not be for everyone, but it's a memorable choice.

Awesome Canteen is also supporting independent F&B entrepreneurs; Mangolicious chutney & Michelle's Artisan Fruit Spread can be purchased here. It's worth noting too that the cafe has ambitious plans afoot; within a month or two, expect the shop-lot next door to become 'A' Gallery (the name's subject to change), a venue for artistic expression.

Spacebar Coffee is a possible clue for the shape of things to come in the Klang Valley's latte-or-not landscape. There's another part-time brew bar that's nearly ready for lift-off: The Roast Things, a Kelana Jaya-based micro-roaster that's strictly not a cafe, spearheaded by Chiam Tow Jin, another relative veteran in the scene despite his still-not-30-yet age.

The Roast Things occupies a SoHo suite on the ninth floor of The Tube complex in the Prima Avenue of Dataran Prima. On weekdays, it's mostly shut (hence, this illicit, ant's-view panorama from beneath a closed door); on some Saturdays (such as July 12), it might host coffee workshops. But this Sunday, July 6 (& potentially most Sundays from then on), walk-in customers are welcome to come here & enjoy coffee (black) brewed with various speciality beans. For an exploration into the unknown, this could be where coffee risk-takers might be found this Sunday.

Spacebar Coffee
At Awesome Canteen on the afternoons of July 4, 10 & 11.

2014 Checkback: Ante Kitchen & Bar @ Solaris Dutamas

This restaurant that prides itself on pork is poised to soon celebrate its two-year mark _ a lifetime, literally, for some eateries. Thankfully, Ante Kitchen & Bar isn't ready to retire; energised by an exuberant crowd on a recent Thursday night, this is one outlet that's worth talking about again in 2014, with a constellation of new-&-improved recipes to reward its returning customers.
Earlier entries on Ante: October 2012 & November 2012.

The evolution of Ante hasn't been a smooth one. In 2013, the restaurant lost its chef-&-co-founder to migration; it could have been a mortal blow, causing food standards to collapse, but the all-male band of twentysomethings who started Ante was determined not to end it all. The result: The food is even better now compared to our previous experiences here, with stand-outs like the signature 'Sweet Belly' (RM26+), a caramel-sauce-soaked row that should satisfy folks seeking the inimitable combination of succulent meat layered with luscious fat & crunchy crackling skin that only the best roast pork belly provides.

The kitchen is currently helmed by Jason, another of Ante's pioneering entrepreneurs & one of our hosts for this meal. Despite being recently married, Jason remains extraordinarily faithful to his restaurant, heading here everyday & keeping his crew on their toes to ensure each hot, hearty plate of pork ear confit (RM15+), sliced into slivers & thickly battered, comes out crispy on the outside & gooey-gelatinous within. Paired with garlicky mayo & potentially an acquired taste (but easily & enjoyably so); it makes us wish Ante would put more offal on the menu, but there seems to be little demand for tail stew, braised tongue & pan-fried liver.

This month, Ante unveils the latest incarnation of its menu; pizzas (never a forte for Ante, frankly) are out, but pastas remain most defiantly in. Still, several surprising changes are afoot: The 'All-Bacon' Carbonara (RM28+), which has long been one of Ante's most popular orders, is here to stay ...

... but it now has stiff competition from a certifiably more alluring upgrade: 'Char siew' carbonara in curry cream (RM32+), crowned with sumptuous slices of sweet-savoury meat, transforming what would otherwise be run-of-the-mill into an only-at-Ante exclusive.

When the epitaph for Ante is someday finally written, the restaurant's char-grilled pork steak (RM46+) could trigger fond, tearful memories. The recipe has been refined this year; it's now a hefty cut closer to the belly, with better marbling than before (dieters, stand back), oozing with flavourful juices, partnered with berry cream sauce that'll complement _ not overpower _ the meat, plus Granny Smith apples, mashed russet potatoes & horseradish sauce.

In 2012, we wrote that Ante's "caveman-worthy pork ribs might rank among KL's most succulent, charcoal-grilled with hickory chips for a lick-your-lips flavour that'll stick to your fingers for hours." That remains the norm here, but the Hogger Ribs (RM85+) _ still fit for the hungriest Neanderthal _ now come soaked in a kitchen-made BBQ sauce that should inspire more lip-licking than ever before.

Even the non-pork recipes fare pretty well: The smoked duck salad with toasted almond flakes & sun-dried tomatoes (RM25+) proves the kitchen's prowess in tackling matters of both taste & texture. It's beautifully dressed, supplying a confident, compelling balance of flavours that extends this salad's allure far beyond KL's leaf-lovers.

Dessert might not be Ante's star attraction, but resisting the bread-&-butter pudding (RM16+) or the apple pie here is more than merely futile _ it's foolish, thanks largely to glutton-approved, swoon-worthy scoops of ice cream.

Now this one's a knock-out: We love affogatos & we order them as often as possible, but Ante's feels like one of KL's best. It's not the coffee that really stands out or even the ice cream, but the sum of the parts, partnered with salted caramel & almond flakes for a flavour-packed, can't-fail combo. RM15+.

Ante has steadily become one of Solaris Dutamas' best-stocked restaurants for wine, offering seven thoughtfully chosen varieties by well-priced glasses (the selection is always evolving, mostly costing RM19+ each). Check with manager CK, one of the newer members of Ante's family, for his recommendations.

Cocktails here prove potent but perhaps sweeter than some might prefer; the passion fruit caipirinha (RM21+), Ante's version of Brazil's national cocktail, is the best bet for this South-American-obsessed month.

Simply D by Delicious @ Nu Sentral, The Curve, Avenue K & Tropicana City

One of KL's most inventive new restaurant concepts is bowling us over this week: Simply D, an offshoot of The Delicious Group, has the potential to become a real haven for customers who love noodles & pasta.

Mix-&-match might be the motto for Simply D: Pick a type of pasta or noodle, then choose how it should be prepared & topped. We're instant fans of the fusilli, an East-meets-West combo that's tossed with pumpkin & salted egg yolk, with a side serving of a whole tea egg. This is one satisfyingly flavoursome creation, thoughtfully executed.

More plus points: This hearty serving costs a lower-than-expected RM13.20+, a boon in these inflation-tormented times. Also, Simply D is a fast-service outlet, so everything is likely to be served within about 10 minutes _  perfect for fugitives on the run.

Exclusively at Simply D: 'PastaMee' (RM13+), linguine prepared pan-mee-style, with creamy minced chicken, a perfectly runny egg, plus chunky sambal that's surprisingly spicy. Absolutely, well, delicious.

Simply D's first branch is now open at Nu Sentral (on the street level, on the outside of the mall, facing the KL Stesen Sentral). Ambitious plans are afoot to launch more outposts in the next several months at The Curve, Avenue K & Tropicana City Mall. It's likely to become a hot topic for foodies; get ahead of the curve, so to speak, by checking out this Nu Sentral original soon.

Other intriguing concoctions here include the flat-noodle pho (RM15+), served not with beef or chicken but with salmon for a lighter-tasting recipe. The highlight in this bowl is the beautifully prepared fish, lightly cooked to retain its total lusciousness.

'Light' is also the likely description for the beef short ribs herbal soup with soba noodles (RM12.50+). The beefy-herbal notes prove less resonant than expected, but what this recipe might lack in richness, it makes up for with a sense of wholesomeness & balanced nutrition that permeates Simply D's menu. Terrific for health obsessives.

We're not entirely smitten with Simply D's version of laksa with char-grilled chicken (RM12+) though; on paper, it's a praise-worthy enterprise, with a base that evokes Sarawak laksa but with coconut water instead of coconut milk. The result might however lack the depth that makes laksa so addictive (though it's still ferociously fiery, for sure).

Simply D is smart enough to serve more than noodles, naturally. Several salads are available too; the most popular choice might be the cafe's interpretation of crisp, fresh-tasting 'som tam' with tender slivers of crab claw (RM15+).

Beef burgers prepared with caramelised onions & brioche buns (RM13+) round up the selection, alongside sandwiches stuffed with the likes of chicken, avocado & pine nuts, or smoked salmon, capers & cream cheese.

Devotees of soft-serve ice cream, rejoice! Raspberry & passionfruit flavours can be had; teh tarik & jackfruit are in the pipeline.

Even the beverages at Simply D display an extraordinary degree of customisation. Have iced tea, lemonade or an ice-blended, in varieties like peach tangerine, mango lychee, green apple, red berry or lemon.

Note the seats too; the attention to detail at Simply D is a lot of fun, signalling a cheerful sense of humour.
