Arthur's

As it turns out, all this place needed was some nip and tuck to look beautiful.

Recently refurbished, The Pub at Shangri-La has been renamed "Arthur's" and rebranded as a Manhattan-style bar and grill.

Live music is performed each night, but it's not the typical hotel lounge band. This one captivated us with evocative, jazzy renditions of "My Funny Valentine" and "You've Got A Friend." The volume is kept to a tolerable level, so customers can still converse easily.

We stopped by here after having dinner elsewhere and were too stuffed by then to really sample Arthur's menu of salads and grilled steaks, lamb, fish and prawns. Nothing that sounded terribly thrilling, but it might still be worth checking out in the future.

Nevertheless, there should always be room for dessert _ especially any as lovably luscious as this double chocolate mud cake with fudge & walnut butterscotch ice cream.

The Black Forest cake with cherry compote & chocolate sponge, served in a bowl and topped with choc ice cream, is Arthur's other signature dessert. A Kirsch-free version, but still rich and fresh-tasting enough to give up our diets for (oh wait, what diet?).

Chandon Prosecco (Australia). Bubbly makes the world go round (and round and round).

Mojito and Long Island Iced Tea. Potent cocktails that pack a powerful punch.

  3. Baby sumo: alas, old age is slowing down my metabolism! :D
Qwazymonkey: heh, I guess the place was showing signs of wear and tear. It's still a nice hangout, with an intimate, casual-ish vibe. And there might still be sausages and fish & chips on the menu! :D

  5. Wowzers! They practically tore the whole place down and built it up again. Seems to have lost it's old school charm though :(

    Diet = Die + t ;)

unka: yeah, quite unexpected! it felt a bit strange walking into this place and suddenly seeing everything look both different and similar at the same time. :D
eiling: oh yeah, the very well-stocked bar was the first thing we noticed when we walked in, heheh! =)
bangsar-babe: sounds like the pub held a lot of memories for many people! but yep, it got kinda musty in the end. i'm diggin' the new look too :D
lfb: the only time that guinness ever appears on this blog is when someone else orders it or if there's some kind of complimentary guinness promotion. or if it's a guinness shooter/cocktail mixed with other stuff #hatebeer =)

  10. Oh why do you hate beer so, my child? We shall have to bring you to Bavaria and you shall change your tune... from wein to bier... :D

  11. lfb: the bitterness, the sharpness of beer ... nowhere as enjoyable as a nice pinot noir :D
i was kinda in bavaria, briefly, in 2004, visiting "the eagle's nest," hitler's former mountaintop retreat, as a day-trip from salzburg. if u wanna fly me there again, i'd say ja! but if u meant a trip to bavarian bierhaus at the curve, then nein :P

You'll never be the same man again after you've had a litre of Franziskaner Weißbier, I guarantee you.

  14. Lfb: eeks, a liter?!? I'm not sure I could do 100ml...

  15. Dude, in Munich a litre of beer or ein Maß is the norm la. But maybe not for Weißbier. I think we take half-litre for that. So you're good. Can minum? :P

  16. lfb: ergkh, i'm trying to think of which law of economics to cite for this ... the one where you'd rather not sacrifice limited resources (stomach space, money) to get something inferior (beer) instead of something superior (wine) :D
