Barrister's Brew, Desa Sri Hartamas

Barristers and baristas come together at this cool space that combines a community law library with a cafe. RM5 gets you a surprisingly satisfying latte, a fresh and crunchy cookie, plus some friendly service - Barrister's Brew would assuredly be acquitted of profiteering.

Mockingbird, Bangsar: Bubbly Weekend Brunch

Bangsar's Mockingbird recently launched a weekend brunch menu - the restaurant is now exclusively open on Saturday and Sunday (with weekdays mainly reserved for special events).

Familiar favourites line the selection, cooked with confidence - it's been awhile since we had Eggs Benedict, so it made sense to try Mockingbird's version, an enjoyable effort of creamy poached eggs over tenderly braised pulled beef ribs, spiced up subtly with chilli hollandaise and coriander pesto, with ebiko and micro greens for extra flourishes (RM28).

Weekends are made for day-drinking - Mockingbird obliges with a French Kiss (RM28; gin with gold Cava) and Sangrias spiked with a little bit more, blending Luis Felipe wine with Hennessy VSOP and Cointreau (RM28).

67-1, Jalan Telawi 3, Bangsar, 59100 Kuala Lumpur. Open Sat-Sun, 10am-5pm. Tel: 03-2380 0277

Five O'clock Brasserie, Bangsar South

If any time feels like a great time for paella, Five O'clock Brasserie strives to please, serving up a steaming-hot pan of Spanish-inspired, seafood-laden rice - at RM42, this is a treat for patrons who prefer a smaller, single-person portion that won't have to be shared.

And since it's always five o'clock somewhere, wine by the glass is readily and always available here.

Cucur Udang Gendut & Sambal Bilis Co

If you like your prawn fritters in princely portions, Cucur Udang Gendut should float your boat. Crackly shell-on crustaceans in pleasantly chewy batter, paired with a subtly spicy peanut sauce and a sweet chilli sauce that both pair perfectly with the classic cucur. Generous servings for RM6.50.

Sambal Bilis Co sells precisely what it says, offering only one product but doing it very well. This isn't your run-of-the-mill sambal kering ikan bilis though, not the chewy and turning-stale anchovies that might come in a mediocre packet of nasi lemak. This ikan bilis is crispy enough to belong in a bag of chips, crackly and crunchy in every bite.

While it's delicious as a side dish, it could double as a snack even on its own, with a fieriness that's slightly on the spicier side of sambal.

Sambal Bilis Co obviously makes its sambal fresh and delivers daily - one jar is RM8, three are RM22, and five are RM36, storable for up to three months.

Wawan Kitchen & Cheppenim's Kitchen

Wawan Kitchen’s Nasi Ayam Roasted Berlambak lives up to its name, with what amounts to almost a double serving of chicken with rice, cucumbers, soup and sauces (RM12). The roast chicken holds up after delivery, still warm and juicy, slobbering with soy sauce. The chilli sauce is on the tamer side, with maybe more needed to match the portion of meat.

The Mee Rebus Daging is similarly sizable, with a thickly 'pekat'-style gravy that’s suitably spicy, its slippery noodles and fleshy-textured beef cubes spruced up with the perfect mix of tofu, bean sprouts, vegetables, chilli and egg (RM10).

Salmon Aglio Olio Bunga Kantan and Hailam Seafood Aglio Olio? Cheppenim's Kitchen dishes out pastas with Malaysian-inspired twists. The Salmon Bunga Kantan feels a tad more aromatic than the typical aglio olio, paired with a princely portion of salmon that could perhaps benefit from more seasoning (RM25.50), while the Hailam Seafood is for folks who favour slightly more gravy-creamy pastas, peppery and punched up with plenty of prawns, squid and mushrooms (RM18.50).

Mr. d'Hazard Salai & Dendeng Roy

Mr. d’Hazard Salai's Daging Salai is an experience, even when you first open its container and the smoky aroma of the beef hits you. The meat bears the typical chew of Malaysia's equivalent of jerky, swathed in the spice and santan of its quintessential lemak cili api gravy - one of the most popular kampung-style dishes that can be delivered to you.

One serving costs RM45, suitable for three or four people to share. The pure meat of the daging salai can also be ordered on its own at around RM20 for a 250-gram packet. Other salai specialities by Mr. d’Hazard include chicken, duck and catfish.

From Opah with love, a lunchbox with a three-generations-old legacy: The Perak-born family that founded Dendeng Roy has long prepared this traditional recipe every Aidilfitri - in 2018, they began selling it during the fasting month and have since turned it into an all-year-round delivery special.

The dark, dry-and-oily beef is served a little more moist than typical , coming in a complete meal with plenty of rice and cucumbers for a kampung-style serving. With a nuanced depth of sweetness, savouriness and spice, surfacing from seven hours of cooking, it might look simple, but it's soulfully satisfying - the dendeng is free of artificial preservatives but can be stored for a few days even at room temperature (RM8; minimum of five boxes per location for each order).

The name Roy? That's apparently Mak's nickname in this family.
