Six Song Cafe serves playful fare with East Asian twists like poached eggs in polo buns with creamy hollandaise sauce, bolstered by comforting classics like pork lard rice blanketed in four-hour-roasted siew yoke and onsen egg.

The city centre’s new attraction for authentic Malay fare, Hening is a super-friendly sanctuary in a Damai Road bungalow, a five-minute drive from KLCC. Its cooking pulls no punches for flavour and fieriness - Ikan Pekasam Utara, preserved fish with a bold fermented savoury tang; Kerabu Pucuk Paku; and Ulam-Ulaman with pleasurably pungent Sambal Belacan.

Chez Flo is a cafe pop-up inside Pudu's Jabba and Luuk, serving brunches with French-inflected flair, run by the team behind Bangsar's Chez Gaston restaurant. Highlights include Eggs Meurette, a Burgundy twist on poached eggs, rich with silky-creamy red wine sauce, layered with mushrooms on sourdough toast.

Now taking reservations for August, Kota Damansara's new Carbon offers one of 2023's most promising Malaysian restaurant experiences - its founders seek to build a team of chefs with passion and purpose, letting their talents and skills shine via meaningful, memorable meals.

On a recent test run, Carbon fired up a chef-driven multi-course dinner with plenty of aged protein, their potently developed flavours deepened with the dynamics of charcoal cooking.

The launch menu was being fine-tuned when we visited. Star ingredients might span Sekinchan flower crab to sea snail chowder with roasted slow-braised cauliflower to crystal-eyed catfish with coconut. 

Other highlights of our meal comprised three-day aged Japanese akami with calamansi and herbs, wagyu beef on potato pave with cured yolk, king tiger prawns with somen in fish broth, momo yakitori with pickles, duck breast with pumpkin, plus intensely decadent desserts that showcased berries and pineapples.

Savoury courses conclude with Carbon's signature donabe, a hearty and soulful Japanese-inspired pot of rice served with the chef's selection of the week, such as crispy sakura ebi.
