Comamos At Rueben's, Subang Jaya

With more fine-tuning for its food, Comamos could become an enjoyable destination, with a wide-ranging menu of Tex-Mex and Filipino favourites. The huevos rancheros is hamstrung by a cloying sauce that evokes mass-market salad dressings (RM14.95), the guacamole would be more pleasant as a chunky, fresh-tasting dip instead of a chilled puree (RM22.95), and the minced beef taco needs some salsa and other vibrant vegetables and cheese for proper dynamics (RM9.95). The Filipino longsilog sausage platter with rice is rustic, with an egg that looks like it endured an accident on the pan (RM14.95). Cocktails like the Margarita befit their price here (RM16), with a little less potency than needed.

CalleVerde Cafe @ Tun H.S. Lee Road

CalleVerde heralds the latest chapter in a pilgrimage of faith for its Filipino founder Cress Hipolito, whose professional F&B experience began with an episode that left her with third-degree burns several years ago. Undeterred, she persisted in pursuing her passion, leading up to this new Chinatown cafe that specialises in Pinoy pastries, cakes and warm meals.

Take a seat amid CalleVerde's lovely setting, complete with potted plants and photographs of Manila and other parts of the world taken by Cressida's fellow Filipino Lolit Whorlow, and start perhaps with an all-day breakfast with a Philippine twist - our best bet is the bangsilog, a tasty fry-up of milkfish with garlic-spiked rice and egg (RM20).

There are rice platters aplenty for both lunch and dinner, such as stir-fried beef salpicao (RM22). For snacking, we'd endorse the lumpiang Shanghai - warm, crisp spring rolls stuffed with spiced ground chicken and carrots, deliciously executed (RM8).

Familiar Western favourites pepper the menu, with mushroom soup or fish and chips (RM22) among the crowd-pleasers, alongside a few intriguing items like the 'Pinoy-style spaghetti,' which packs a mellow sweetness (RM12).

Baked fare is ultimately the pride of this place - the purple yam cake is a winner, nicely textured and balanced in flavour; we also like the dulce de leche cake, which conveys fragrant notes of caramel without being too sugary.

For something special, sample the fresh-from-the-oven buko pie, a young-coconut custard pie that's a traditional treat from the province of Laguna. Definitely worth checking out for fans of pie who want a change from the typical ones available in KL.

Wrap up your visit with CalleVerde's kitchen-made avocado ice cream, brimming with natural nuances, and bring home some milky buns stuffed with tuna and other fillings. CalleVerde also offers satisfactory juices and coffee.

CalleVerde is conveniently located a very short walk from the Pasar Seni transit station.

This cafe is the sister outlet of Petaling Jaya's The Narra, which has cultivated a reputation for being one of the Klang Valley's premier venues for a full-blown Filipino feast.

Service exudes the warmth and hospitality that are part of the Filipino culture.

Many thanks to the CalleVerde team for having us.

2017 Menu: The Narra Filipino Resto Lounge @ PJ Dataran Millennium

Mabuting Gana! Our latest visit to The Narra left us pretty impressed with how this restaurant has fast evolved into the Klang Valley's leading location for Filipino cooking; the kitchen here is fully run by a team from the Philippines, promising a plethora of peerlessly Pinoy dishes not often sighted in Peninsular Malaysia. You might feel intimately familiar with Thai, Vietnamese & Indonesian cuisine, but it's time to get acquainted with the gastronomic attractions of one more Southeast Asian neighbour.

The menu at The Narra (named for the Philippines' national tree) is encyclopedic. Start with the sausages, skewers & salads - the longaniza pork sausages are a should-have, slightly garlicky, sweetly mellow, rustically succulent ((RM12 for four pieces); freshly made in-house for the ultimate moistness, terrifically textured & tasty, preservative-free & without MSG. For mindless munching, the sticks of ketchup-glazed barbecued pork loin (RM9 for three) & the isaw, the quintessential Filipino street food of grilled chicken intestines, seasoned with a punchy vinegar-based sauce (RM6 for two), should also capably whet the appetite. Balance the meal with a juicy, enlivening green mango salad with shrimp paste that's imported the Philippines (RM6).

Pork is a cornerstone of The Narra's repertoire, well represented by lip-smacking Filipino favourites like the classic bellychon (RM18; roasted, rolled & herb-rubbed pork belly, paired with liver sauce), inihaw na liempo (RM12; savoury marinated grilled pork belly) & the inimitable sizzling sisig (RM15; gelatinous chopped pig's head, served with an egg, seasoned with calamansi & chilli peppers). If you're a swine-ivore, there's plenty to check out here.

Don't leave without trying the fish - The Narra does thorough justice to ikan susu (milkfish), illustrating how the food here is painstakingly prepared in ways that would consume much time & effort for home cooks. The rellenong bangus is deboned, flaked, stuffed with carrots, peas & raisins, & fried to a lovely golden colour, retaining heaps of tenderness & a sweetish taste - a unique recipe that's definitely worth ordering (RM30). The daing na bangus is The Narra co-founder Cress' most cherished offering - fried whole milkfish, deliciously marinated in vinegar, garlic & peppercorns (RM25).

Other seafood also secure star treatment - squid is firm & bouncy, packed with a vibrant melange of tomatoes & onions, while shrimp surfaces in a tangy, tamarind-based soup that'll perk up the palate. Round off the meal with comfort-food portions of beef kare-kare (RM15; beef tenderloin stewed in peanut sauce) & pinakpet (RM7; a mix of pumpkin, eggplant, string beans & ladies' fingers stir-fried in shrimp paste). Prices are fair enough that a family of four can feast comfortably for below RM100.

Filipinos adore their desserts, so if you have a sweet tooth, try the puto flan (RM8; a decadent combination of steamed cakes topped with silky leche creme caramel); halo-halo (RM8; the beloved shaved ice speciality) & pichi-pichi (RM3.50; glutinous cassava sprinkled with grated cheese), washed down with an avocado shake (RM9) & Red Horse extra-strong beer (RM18).

The Narra also features shelves of Filipino snacks & sauces, from corned beef to crackers & liver paste - perfect to purchase if you want to experiment with Pinoy fare at home. There's a lot happening here, from live acoustic performances on selected nights to plans for a bakery that'll produce the Philippines' popular pandesal bread. Many thanks to The Narra for having us.
