The Bowls x Pretty On Plate: Savoury + Sweet Yee Sang

This year's yee sang, settled: Two KL-based eateries, The Bowls & Pretty On Plate, have combined forces to offer savoury & sweet yee sang platters that prove distinctive & delicious, one powered by pork & another by chocolate - a refreshing change from run-of-the-mill yee sang, skilfully prepared with thoughtfully chosen components of irreproachable virtue.

The Japanese Fusion Chashu Yee Sang is a thing of beauty, intricately detailed with a bumper crop of free-range tender pork slices, four types of Japanese seaweed, six types of fresh vegetables & fruits (purple cabbage, radish, carrots, sweet corn, Japanese cucumber & lemon), seasoned jellyfish, ebiko, walnuts & sesame seeds, rounded out with house-made wasabi wafu dressing & sesame oil. The harmoniously mellow flavours feel natural & nuanced, the textures are crisp & juicy, like a fulfilling cross between a rich salad & regular yee sang; this normal-sized portion costs RM88, sufficient for four to six persons.

We were equally impressed with the beautifully balanced Designer Dessert Yee Sang, lusciously enlivening with 10 types of fruits & vegetables & fruits (mandarin oranges, pomegranates, pomelo, lychees, strawberries, pineapple cubes, dried cranberries, turnips, carrots & watercress), given deeper dimensions by four types of designer desserts (Callebaut dark chocolate pearls, 54-percent dark chocolate cake, passion-fruit-infused glass noodles, & salted caramel truffle balls), almond 'prosperity coins' & roasted peanuts, complemented by a honey yuzu sauce. Again, the attention to detail is admirable, the proportions prove precise, & the overarching result is not too sweet but capably crowd-pleasing, sumptuous & satisfying.

These playful yee sang platters will memorably brighten up this season's Chinese New Year celebrations; many thanks to The Bowls & Pretty On Plate for these. Ordering instructions are available at thebowls.asia - in-store pick-ups can be arranged at the two outlets.

  1. Oh my!!! They're all so beautiful! So pretty, so colourful. I don't know if we can get any here or not, some supermarkets may bring in some, not many. We do not get these at our restaurants, not usually.

    1. Suituapui: ooo, i didn't realise yee sang was tricky to find in your town - but hopefully you'll get to toss a good one for the year of the rooster! :)

  2. Pork and chocolate? Interesting! I haven't had any yeeshang yet.

    1. CK: hopefully you'll have some yee sang by next week! :D

  3. The yee sang with pork looks really good! Nice change from fish, eh?

    1. Phong Hong: yeah - though they actually also do a salmon yee sang for anyone who wants it ;)
