Johann's Biereck @ Vienna International Airport, Leroy Bistro @ Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport, Burgerlab & Selamlique @ Istanbul Atatürk Airport

Johann's Biereck gives airport restaurants a good name - warm service, bolstered by a very satisfying meal of succulent deep-fried breaded chicken with lamb's lettuce, potato mash & Styrian pumpkin seed oil. Not a shabby way to bid farewell to Austria.

Leroy Bistro is perfectly serviceable if you need some sustenance while waiting for your flight at Budapest's airport, though the veal ragout soup & Zwack plum liqueur cocktail will likely fade from your memory by the time you reach your next destination.

Burgerlab gives airport restaurants a bad name - surly service, with a burger that conveys purely salty dimensions of flavour.

Trapped in transit for five hours in Turkey's international airport? Take refuge at Selamlique Istanbul, which offers eight types of Turkish coffee (try the one with a mastic finish), sugary fig-&-walnut pound cakes & bitter almond liqueur to help pass the time.

  1. Ah, luxurious dining somewhat. Do you also happen to see lots of veggie restaurants around? I'm a little interested with vegan right now.

    1. Lux: I'll keep a lookout for those ... maybe airports aren't the ideal place to start a vegan restaurant though! But I do see vegan options in malls now :)

  3. The cakes are lovely. I only need coffee and good cakes like this with comfy seats for flight delays. The longest delays I ever had was in HKG that was 18 hours but they put me up at Marriot for free. Hihihi...

Honestly, the rentals at the big airports cost a bomb in places like Tokyo, HKG and Taipei. So the standard of the food & restaurants were often above average to excellent though pricey.

    1. Twilight Man: i quite dislike being trapped in transit, so it helps when there are good cafes, restaurants and bars in the airport ... but you're right, i did like the choices of eateries at tokyo and hong kong's airports! :D
