Tanuki by Crustz, Taman Bukit Indah

One of KL's coolest dessert destinations, Tanuki by Crustz tackles plated ice cream cakes and sorbet floats; as its name suggests, this new OUG outlet is the latest initiative by the skilled founders of PJ's Xiao by Crustz, so expect a clear passion for craftsmanship here.

These treats are conceived in the French-inspired style of 'little cakes,' easily enjoyed in six or seven mouthfuls. Of the two we tried, our favourite is the floral-shaped Chocolate Rose, comprising chocolate and coffee ice cream with coffee meringue, densely decadent but not cloying (RM20); the Caramel Almond, layered with with almond ice cream, roasted pistachios and caramel sauce, is more crunch than cream, but that's probably for practical purposes in constructing this concoction (RM17). Fun fact: Some of these house-made ice creams are spiked with liqueurs like kahlua and amaretto, deepening their flavours.

The floats (RM16 each) are cute enough to warm and melt many hearts: The Real Strawberry Milk Float is crowned with a lovely sorbet of strawberry and lychee with a pleasurable stickiness, though it's hobbled by milk ice balls that prove too hard and frosty to harmonise with the beverage; the Iced Passion Peach Sparkling, meanwhile, is for patrons who relish a powerfully tangy punch. Second fun fact: The drinks contain herbs like mint and rosemary harvested from Tanuki's own indoor mini-garden, which doubles as a delightful backdrop for the tables here.
