Hoi Kee Lobster & DimSum House, Segambut

By EDKL Writer A.A.

Lobster siu mai, lobster cheong fun, lobster porridge, and even lobster laksa: The claws are coming out at Segambut's casual new lair for crustacean lovers.

Relying on U.S.-sourced lobster, Hoi Kee aims for a measure of affordability in premium dim sum like the lobster siu mai and lobster cheong fun (RM18 each). Our favourite would be the steamed dumplings, for which the firm, fleshy lobster stands out more prominently in each bite; the rice rolls, meanwhile, could be stuffed with more lobster meat for a sweeter, more succulent experience.

For a complete one-bowl meal, customers can choose from lobster porridge or lobster laksa; we picked the latter, in a version that's complemented with other seafood, including prawns, mussels, squid and clams, in a curry-based broth for RM40 (a lobster-only laksa costs RM30). With half a whole lobster in this laksa serving, it's probably a better bet than the Western lobster roll, which tastes more of mayo than lobster (RM25).

Non-lobster dishes are also available; customers can also cross-order from the kopitiam downstairs (char kuey teow and more) for a surcharge. Coffee takes cues, similarly, from both East and West, ranging from Local Kopi (RM3.50) to a variation of iced latte (RM7.90).
