Tampopo Cafe @ Bandar Menjalara & Zest Patisserie @ Cheras

Carb attack: This new neighbourhood cafe is a cosy stop for snacking on finger food like piping-hot pumpkin wedges (RM9) & French fries (RM7.50) - but save space for dessert; the chocolate dome is soft & sumptuous, infused with Hennessy Cognac & laced within with ripe bananas (RM18.90), while the purple sweet potato Mont Blanc makes for a pleasantly well-executed twist on the chestnut cream cake (RM14.90). Balance the meal with a cold-pressed blend of beetroot & green apples (RM13).

Tampopo Cafe
18, Jalan 4/62A Bandar Menjalara, Kuala Lumpur. Tues-Fri, 12pm-9pm. Sat-Sun, 1030am-9pm

Zest Patisserie tries to tackle French-inspired gateaux, made with thoughtfully sourced ingredients like Elle & Vire cooking cream (which contributes to the cost of each cake, hovering between the RM13-RM16 range). Creations include vanilla sponge with white chocolate thyme mousse & kumquat coulis; chocolate sponge with choc mousse, choc cremeaux & hazelnut feuilletine; matcha dacquiose with coconut mousse & passionfruit cremeux; pear mousse tarts with caramel cremeux; or choux with rose cream, lychee jelly & raspberry crisps - not the typical cakes seen in this neighbourhood.

Zest Patisserie
K-G-3, Connaught Avenue, No 38, Jalan 9, Taman Bukit Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.
Tues-Sun, 130pm-11pm. Tel: 016-617-6644
