Sunday Champagne Lunches @ Shook!, Starhill Gallery

It's been years since we stepped into Shook!, the longtime centrepiece of Starhill Gallery's Feast Village, but returning here is like a reassuring embrace from an old friend - the restaurant remains as exuberant as ever, with the festive liveliness particularly pronounced for its Sunday buffet lunches, when families & friends come together & linger for hours of merriment.

Typically, Shook! hosts a Mad Hatter-themed lunch each Sunday; we were here for Father's Day, with the entire buffet remaining intact. Shook! continues to advocate four primary show kitchens that bustle with action & energy - Chinese, Japanese, Italian & a Western grill - with a smorgasbord of temptations across the counters: fresh seafood to cold cuts & multiple types of house-cured salmon, red meat & poultry galore, soups, salads & stews, rice & noodles, creamy cheeses & luscious, colourful desserts. The midday meal lasts for four hours, so take your time to savour everything your heart desires.

Besides the buffet, customers at the Sunday lunch can also order an a la carte sampling of plated specialities that include some of Shook!'s familiar signatures - pan-seared scallops with green pea puree, cod fish with potato & curry veloute, beef cheeks with mashed potatoes, tortellini with wild mushrooms, steamed sea bass with bean sauce, stir-fried 'dancing prawns' with hot mayo & honey-glazed walnuts, fried rice with chicken, grilled tenderloin with polenta & peppercorn sauce, & more.

Sunday lunches clock in at RM298 nett with a limitless flow of Mo√ęt & Chandon champagne, or RM188 nett for food only & RM94 nett for children. For the Father's Day event, Shook! teamed up with Broker's London Dry Gin to create a special selection of hand-crafted gin-based cocktails - Frisky Brit (Broker's Gin, tonic, a splash of 7-up, fresh cucumber), Broker's Promise (Broker's Gin, cranberry juice, 7-up), Winston Churchill Martini (Broker's Gin shaken over ice & served with a twist of lime) & John Collins (Broker's Gin, lemon juice, sugar syrup, soda water). A roving mime & magician (with an excellent bending fork performance) kept everyone's spirits high throughout the session. Many thanks to Shook! for having us here.

  1. Champagne for lunch? That's like...wowwww!!! Godh!!! That mountain of prawns! I would feast on those! And the macaron hill! LOL!!! Those Caucasians are so sporting, the balloons on their heads - we Asians tend to be a bit shy, you think?

    1. Suituapui: heheh, day drinking is as fun as nighttime guzzling ;) yep, those prawns seemed pretty popular - i had only a few, but i probably should have taken more, heh :) i actually wouldn't mind 'wearing' those balloons if more than 30 percent of the people around me were doing so :D

  2. I notice a predominantly 'expatriate' crowd here. I remember the 'dancing prawns' (and black cod) vividly from my first visit to Shook many years good! I also remembered that meal cost me RM200 per person back then, so RM188 (at present times) isn't a bad deal at all. You've teased my interest ;)

    1. Contact.ewew: yep, you're right, the crowd did seem to be two-thirds expat for this lunch. and ya, i think considering all the food available here, the pricing is fairly reasonable. especially if you love cheese, cos they have a really good assortment of cheeses here, including some lovably stinky ones ;)

  3. Oh yes, such fond memories of this place. They sure do know how to make a fun Sunday.

    1. The Yum List: if every sunday were like this, well, we'd all be super-tipsy long before sunset, heh :D

  4. Wah! This is like fantasy land to me! I can understand how one can spend hours here. I won't be able to get off my chair at the end of it :D

    1. Phong Hong: haha, ya, i wouldn't have minded if they had added even more time and it had been a five or six-hour lunch! :D
