Il Bacaro & Via Pre @ George Town, Penang

Penang’s flourishing food scene has drawn restaurateurs from far and near, including several Italians. The gregarious Roberto Dreon, who hails from Venice, presides over Il Bacaro, which promises trattoria-style cooking that blends authentic finesse with home-cooked honesty. Try the seafood stew, pizzas and duck ravioli with butter and herbs, and chocolate desserts; the kitchen prepares much of the pastas and sauces from scratch.

Il Bacaro
Campbell House, 106 Campbell Street, George Town, Penang. Daily, 8am-11pm. Tel: +60 4-261-8290

Also conveying a taste of la dolce vita, Maurizio Ranauro’s Via Pre will make hearty eaters very happy. This cavernous restaurant is bursting with Italian hams and cheeses, alongside plenty of pastas, meats and classic desserts like tiramisu with fresh twists, with a wine list that’s roughly 90 percent Italian.

Via Pre
5 Weld Quay, George Town, Penang. Daily, 11am-11pm. Tel: +604-262-0560

This spotlight on George Town is part of a feature on Penang's recommended restaurants, cafes & bars - read the full feature in the November 2015 issue of Going Places, Malaysia Airlines' in-flight magazine, or on Going Places' website (link here).

  2. True-blue Italian chefs, can't get any more authentic than that. Have not been to Penang for a long time now, wishing I could do that sometime...but usually when I went there, I would hit the stalls for the hawker delights.

    1. Suituapui: yeah, everyone makes a beeline for penang's hawker fare, which is pretty terrific. it was interesting to explore this other side of penang, with faces from outside the country coming in and calling the island their home for now :)
