Big Hug Burger @ SS15 Subang Square

A big bear hug for Big Hug Burger: The Klang Valley's burger frenzy has found a focal point in Subang, where multiple outlets are opening for SS15's college crowd.

Big Hug Burger, which launched this week, is one of the nicest-looking burger joints so far, thanks partly to the fact that its owners include a graphic artist. The cafe's tailored for the young, with Justin Bieber & Jessie J playing on the speakers, a huge teddy bear for cuddling on a couch & a within-walking-distance location from INTI & Taylor's.

As far as recipe inventiveness goes, the law of diminishing returns is taking effect, but Big Hug's owners say their emphasis is on using comparatively healthier ingredients, from wholemeal buns to grass-fed Aussie beef & fresh corn oil.

Red meat to relish first: Big Hug's lamb burger (RM14, no taxes or service charge) features a house-made grilled patty, roasted cherry tomatoes, caramelized onions, mozzarella & cheddar cheeses, gherkins & lots of crisp lettuce.

The bamboo charcoal bun beef burger (RM15) comes with the same toppings & even more, including sauteed shiitake mushrooms & garlic aioli. Hearty & tasty, but no longer revolutionary, not at this point in 2013.

What's actually awesome here: the Big Hug Crispy Chicken Chop burger (RM19 with extra egg), boasting a jumbo chunk of ultra-juicy thigh meat, onion rings, pineapple slices & an uber-creamy "secret sauce" that's absolutely addictive. This is the one to order.

Fun for fish fans: Salmon fillet & battered dory burgers (RM14 & RM12) respectively.

Herb-sprinkled fries, soft & fluffy-thick, though missing the crisp that some might prefer.

We've buried the lead here: one major teething trouble must be noted. On opening day, some among the stunningly patient lunch crowd of 50-plus patrons had to wait over two hours (!!!) for their burgers to be served (150 minutes to be exact, enough time to drive to Malacca or watch most of The Godfather: Part III).

In other words, some who ordered at 12:30pm only ate at 3pm. Many might advise not coming at peak hours to avoid swamping the three-member kitchen crew, but here's a caveat: Big Hug opens noon through 10:30pm, but on the first day, the burgers were sold out hours early. The terrific news is the owners have vowed to make improvements very soon.
Update: As of May, the waiting time has improved to below thirty minutes at peak hours.

  1. The teddy! Absolutely cute!!! That would have been a comforting sight and hg for me even if I had to wait for my food...but I supposed my patience will only last half hour at the max.

Must say that the Big Hug Crispy Chicken Chop burger looks like a better version of McDonald's Chicken deluxe that I love a lot (simply because its spicy and uses thigh meat).

    1. Missyblurkit: ooh, I'm a major fan of cuddly teddy bears too! One of my favorite birthday presents ever was a stuffed bear like this that my university friends gave me for my 23rd birthday :D and yeah, I never would have imagined that the burgers would take 2.5 hours to be ready! On the plus side, yes, the chicken burger is amazing! And I think they use the meat from both the thigh and drumstick, cos its really a huge chicken chop, at least three times the size of a KFC zinger patty :D

    1. Ulric: ooh, I should note that the dory burger is very good (maybe my 2nd favorite burger here, after the chicken). Moist and flaky inside, crunchy but not oily on the outside =)

    2. The magic words....moist, flaky, crunchy n non-oily...will attack d dory first!!! :3

    3. Ulric: yay! This is indeed one instance in which the dory feels preferable instead of salmon =)

    1. Cindy: heheh, I hope the teddy has received many hugs from you! :D ya, one of the owners was sincerely apologetic about the long wait (though frankly, some of her staff members appeared to not care), and I do hope and trust that they'll take the necessary measures, like hiring more folks in the kitchen =)

  4. Sounds exciting so far.....I think I am gonna try that soon. And I am obviously in love with the teddy photos. The first cute element that I've seen in your posts. *hugs*

    1. Sycookies: hope you enjoy Big Hug's burgers! =) heheh, ya, I would have loved to sit on the couch and snuggle up with the stuffed bear, but a large group was occupying that couch for most of the afternoon. Love teddies! :D

  8. The group who waited for hours for their burger have my respect. But I do understand that no matter how many people they have in the kitchen, unless it's one man show, the shop has to run due to cost and sorts. That said, I hope that they get more staff soon as I want to try them! :P

    1. Chong: yeah, i think they'd need about 10 people in the kitchen to really keep things moving faster. maybe you can check them out sometime in May :D

    1. Melissa: heheh, i have a feeling that we might still see one or two more burger outlets open at SS15. but you're right, everyone is hugging the bear here, so it might actually be contaminated with bacteria after awhile! :D

  11. OMG 3 hours wait! Seriously.. I would have walked out after 1 hour since I would be dying of hunger. LOL! But the decor is definitely nice.

    1. Baby Sumo: heheh, yeah, customers all have to pay for the food at the counter immediately after ordering, so it would have been a bit complicated to cancel the order and request a refund. luckily it was a nice place to wait in, heheh :D

  13. Hi Sean, I love the bear!!! I find the decor is unique, bright and attractive. The fries sound very good with herbs...but like you said, they lack the crispness that some may prefer or are used to. Still, I would try them anyway because there are herbs. Great post, as always!

    1. Linda: true, the herbs do add a nice scent to the fries and make them taste more nuanced. thanks for your kind words! :D

  15. Seems like KL-lites like you are getting pretty jaded with the red meat offerings, what with burger joints popping up like mushrooms! Glad to know that they're offering a pimped up Zinger/McDeluxe! Nice review! =D

  18. I saw myself ! haha ! The food there is really awesome but the owner seriously need to improve on their time management. We went at 11am and we waited for 30 minutes only the owner said that they actually start business at 12:30pm and the chefs are not there yet. Fine. We waited 'cause we really want to try out their food. Then we waited for another 1hour+ only our food came. My friends were so pissed off 'cause we have an exam after lunch and our lunch time is only for an hour. We wanted to walk off but we had to pay upon ordering ! smart. Eventually, we were really late for our exam on that day. Luckily our teacher is kind and waited for us. If not, all of us will have flunk ! Anyways, the food is really awesome, it's only that their time management is a boo.

    1. Carolyn: phew, am glad to hear you guys enjoyed your food, and that your teacher was nice! :D ya, i agree that they should have requested for their chefs to arrive earlier on the first day, to prepare some of the food first. i hope they'll make sure that all burgers are served within less than one hour soon :D

  19. To be honest, I'm not surprised. With only three people manning the kitchen and a growing crowd of hungry diners, it's quite difficult to get all the burgers to everyone at the same time.

We'll see whether the owners will improve, cause they really need to.

I don't think I'll be able to wait for 2 hours for my food. The most I've waited was an hour, and I almost wanted to strangle the waitress. >.<"

If this is facing the SS15 field, I thought I saw lots of college students crowding there...

    1. Waverly: yeah, the owner did get stressed out after awhile (though i must say, her cashier looked like he didn't care and was almost happy to see everyone forced to wait, heh) :D actually, i guess it could have been worse. if there had been more than 50 customers, the wait might have turned out to be even longer, heh :D

  20. Haha you need to go on a break from burgers for awhile. You sound like you're getting jaded! I'd actually like to give those fish burgers a try. I'd like to have some alternatives besides the good ol' Fillet O Fish! :D

    Replies
    1. Drops Of Contentment: ooo, you have a good point, maybe i should lay off burgers for a month or so. and you're right, the fish burgers here are worth sampling. most of the other recently opened burger outlets only serve meat burgers, no fish burgers, heh =)

  22. Actually the owner told me it took 3 hours because the oven broke down. You might want to remove that malacca comment thing.

    1. StudentLikeYou: that's odd, since we were not informed on that afternoon of any oven breakdown. but it's true that the waiting time has improved since then, so i've added an updated line about it at the end of the entry.
