Garrett Popcorn & Candylicious

Turns out they were awaiting an auspicious date: after months of anticipation, Garrett Popcorn & Candylicious finally opened at KLCC on 11/11/11.

Singapore has already tasted the Chicago-based Garrett's premium popcorn, but now it's Malaysia's chance. Plus, Garrett will also have a 1 Utama branch soon. Prices start at nine ringgit for a small bag that two can share, but the less basic flavors cost RM16 a bag.

Limited varieties were available for Garrett's first morning: the classic buttery type was like a blast from the past, reminding us of what the TGV cinema chain once offered years ago, back when its popcorn was near-perfect. Crisp, fluffy & yes, brilliantly buttery.

Also addictive: the signature CaramelCrisp, distinguished by Garrett's description of a "brown sugar & creme brulee crunch." We never realized popcorn could be called full-bodied, but this sure is _ heavy & richly flavorsome, though not cloyingly sweet. The CaramelCrisp comes with optional nuts: almonds, pecans or macadamias.

Next door to Garrett: Candylicious, a Willy Wonka-esque dream come true.

We made a beeline for the jelly beans, which come in a dizzying range of dazzling flavors like cinnamon & watermelon, pleasurably chewy but punishingly sugary. Also available now are Christmas confections such as this Belgian chocolate Santa bear.

Imported treats galore: all the way from Arizona, Cold Stone Creamery's Peanut Butter Cups, for those occasions when Reese's Pieces aren't enough.

Coffee & cream chocolate slices, luxuriously milky.

But wait! Garrett & Candylicious are actually part of a triumvirate here at KLCC's concourse; sometime in the next few days, Bruno Gelato will also open. Weight watchers, tremble.

  1. My favorite is caramel + macadamias. bloody expensive here though, it's like sgd8 for a small caramel crisp, sgd9 for a small caramel+nuts.

  2. Timing: ooo, means it's slightly cheaper in kl, if u judge from the conversion rate, since the small caramelcrisp is RM16 here. But yeah, in terms of purchasing power, once again, we fare comparatively poorly in malaysia!

  3. Whoa!! Do they have cheese popcorns? I bet lots of people gonna smuggle these into cinemas now. Haha.

  4. Chong: yup, the CheeseCorn & Chicago Mix (caramelcrisp + CheeseCorn) varieties should be available here by next week. And heh, yeah, these taste way better than TGV's current popcorn! :D

  5. what it means by "less basic flavor"? and even more expansive?

The fact that popcorn really look fluffy :D can't wait to try out!

  7. Are they lukewarm when u purchase them?

  8. Gelato. Popcorn. Candy. There goes my waistline... :P

  9. Fui: yeah, the two basic flavors are 'plain' & 'butter,' which both cost RM9 for a small bag. the premium flavors are 'caramelcrisp,' 'cheesecorn,' 'chicago mix,' which cost RM16, & 'caramelcrisp with nuts,' which costs RM19 (all for small bags). hope you manage to try them soon and enjoy them! :D
Michelle: heheh, yeah, decadent popcorn has finally landed in KL! am looking forward to trying the cheesecorn flavor soon =)

  10. Baby Sumo: yeps, they are! they're kept inside heated display/storage counters, similar to the ones at the multiplexes :D
Kenny: aiya, you can stand to gain a few inches lah, oh you of the 26-inch waist. besides, a popcorn diet might be healthier than atkins =)

  11. I should have known you would be there on opening day! Was heading to KLCC for lunch with colleagues and was all set to get some Garrett on the way back but plans changed. Could have bumped into you! Sigh does the 5-10 min walk from office justify pigging out on all the above snacks? lol

  12. Adam: heheh, oh yeah, all still seemed calm at garrett yesterday morning. no queues at all! candylicious attracted a fair number of curious browsers though. definitely worth a 10-min walk, but prepared to spend at least 10 minutes in candylicious itself! and gosh, i think i'd need a 10-hour walk to burn off all the garrett calories :D

  13. I love flavoured popcorn! Looks TGV might have to start checking bags for treats rather than video cameras.

  14. Yeah. The Chicago Mix is good. Sweet and salty at the same time. Hehe.

  15. Haha, maybe I'll buy them and sneak into cinema! woops...

    @Sean: You so dead. Grrr....

  19. Yum List: heheh, i know of someone already who's planning to buy the popcorn here at klcc and bring it over to pavilion gsc to munch during a movie! :D
Chong: gosh, and the popcorn is addictive too. i wonder how many calories are in one bag. *gulp*
Fui: heheh, just make sure the cinema employees don't catch you! :D

  20. Baby Sumo: yep, he's very slender. reminds me of a 14-year-old kid (maybe grayson chance) =)
Vien: heheh, there's definitely been a lot of excitement about garrett! :D
Kenny: but it's true! after all, your nickname is 'skinny horsie' =)

  21. Garrett's Caramel Crisp!! Can never stop until the bag is empty!!! I love how evenly sized and round all the kernels used to be. Sadly a year after opening in Dubai, I find the quality has dropped. There never used to be smaller bits in the bag and the kernels are smaller and less even in size now. Have to try the KLCC one when I get back.

  24. Kenny, I wanna know how to maintain a 26 inch waist leh. Teach me can ah? :P

    ReplyDelete
  25. Btw, I believe Sean also has a 26 inch waist right.

  26. GFAD: oooh, now i'm worried that the quality for the KL branch will slide after a few months too! but gosh, i didn't realize that garrett had invaded dubai too. wonder if they're the world's leading purveyor of premium popcorn, heheh =)
Kenny: fatty horse? that sounds like it would be excellent for horse sashimi (which i haven't had in a very long time!) :D

  27. Iamthewitch: heheh, sorry! i guess the compromise would be to have a small bag of popcorn and then spend a couple of hours at the gym! it'll all balance out in the end, cross fingers =)
Baby Sumo: ahhh, but i think kenny still can't beat shakira, the singer who has a 24-inch waist! alas, the slimmest i've been in my adult life is 28-inch. now i'm at least 32, sigh! :D

  28. Tried at Singapore. Is nice but not cheap. Worst is... will get addicted to it. Wait for 1U to open then is nearby to get it. Any idea when 1U outlet will open?

    ReplyDelete
  29. caramelcrips is nice or caramelcrips with nut is nice?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Adrian: the 1U outlet is supposed to open before the end of this year. not sure exactly when though. hope it's very soon! :D
Tat Jun: it depends. if you like nuts, then go for the flavor with nuts. but if you don't like nuts, then caramelcrisp is nice by itself =)

  31. How come you didn't buy any M&M's?!!! :(

    ReplyDelete
  32. eiling: heheh, actually, i didn't notice any M&Ms :D

  33. I feel my waistline expanding already. Have...to...stay...away...from...caramel crisps..LOL

  34. unkaleong: hahah, or just do your penance with extra time at the gym! one hour for each bag of popcorn! :D

  35. Fantastic colors of candy-coated chocolate buttons at Candylicious (do they also disallow photography?) - I got some cool black, baby blue, olive green, etc. And I reckon they taste better than emNems.. :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. GFAD: you guessed right! photography within candylicious was banned (there were posters requesting that cameras not be used), so i had to just take a simple shot outside. yeah, the colors of the candy here are so vibrant, i have to wonder though, how much artificial coloring must they pour into them :D
