2016: Morelli's Gelato Malaysia @ Bangsar Shopping Centre

One of BSC's most cheerful spots for chilling out, Morelli's ranks high among KL's best bets for gelato, maintaining a reputation for top-flight Italian-style ice cream that stretches from Morelli's in London to Morelli's in Monaco, extending a proud tradition that first began when Italian emigrant Giuseppe Morelli settled in the UK & started selling ice cream from the back of his bicycle in 1907. We enjoyed our first visit to Morelli's Malaysia in February 2014, so it was a pleasure to return to check out this gelato parlour's latest range of crowd-indulging creations, from sundaes to soft-serves, sure-fire hits for the young at heart.

Morelli's showcases a wide selection of sundaes; alluringly crafted, they're not only supremely photogenic but taste as sumptuously delicious as they look. We gleefully scooped up every spoonful of the luscious Bacio sundae (RM41.40), a premium trio of chocolate, hazelnut & vanilla gelato, made enjoyably elaborate with Piemonte hazelnuts, a chocolate truffle, swirls of Magnum chocolate, hazelnut sauce, wafer biscuits & fresh whipped cream. Morelli's ice cream flavours feel naturally rich & nuanced - a testament to the quality of its ingredients. Other sundae temptations here include the Berry Pavlova (with a base of wildberry sorbet, strawberry & fruit yoghurt), Banana Royale (banana, caramel dulce de leche & soft vanilla gelato), Pina Colada (pineapple sorbet, plus coconut & vanilla gelato), & quite a few more - certainly something for every sundae lover.

If you prefer a simpler serving to relish on the move, gelato & soft-serve cones are also available. With 18 different flavours offered everyday, patrons remain spoilt for choice - from Straciatella to Nutella, Chocolate Peanut Butter to Coffee Bean Crunch, Green Apple to Pink Grapefruit, Salted Caramel to Rocher, Cookies to Sweet Corn, all the dense, smooth gelato is produced fresh every morning in KL. You'll also find soft-serves if you like lighter textures, in flavours like vanilla, chocolate or pistachio. Gelato costs RM10.60 for a single scoop, RM15.90 for a double & RM20.20 for a triple. Soft-serves are RM9.90.

Other enticements include the eye-catching kids' sundaes - check out the banana split-inspired concoction of chocolate & vanilla gelato with rainbow sprinkles (RM23), cutely shaped like a fairyland creature, a visual delight that should make any child's day. There are also ice cream-based beverages for both adults & their offspring - the Bailey's Espresso features coffee gelato blended with Bailey's & a shot of espresso for a gratifying kick (RM37.10), while the signature Affogato dunks an ice-cold flourish of soft vanilla gelato into a hot espresso (RM14.90). Many thanks to the Morelli's team for having us back here.
