El Faro Tapas Bar @ George Town, Penang

This modern European tapas bar is helmed by Penang native Jack Yeap, a terrific chef who returned to his hometown to open his own restaurant after honing his craft in Singapore. Yeap’s nuanced creations supply spellbinding flavours, progressing smoothly from cold capellini with konbu & lumpfish caviar to hot squid ink rice with mixed seafood & aioli, a ravishingly fresh & sweet potato salad to watermelon topped with Spanish white anchovies & mint, toast stuffed with eggplant & red peppers to Iberico pork jowl with apple kimchi & maple sour cream, squid ink rice with seafood to stewed clams with white wine & chorizo.

El Faro
231 Burmah Road, George Town, Penang. Thurs-Tues, 3pm-1130pm. Tel: +604-227-2310

This spotlight on George Town is part of a feature on Penang's recommended restaurants, cafes & bars - read the full feature in the November 2015 issue of Going Places, Malaysia Airlines' in-flight magazine, or on Going Places' website (link here).

  1. I like the simplicity of the C&C.....capellini with caviar! Oh, I also want to mop up every last drop of that clam stew! ;)

    1. Contact: yeah, that capellini was the first dish that arrived ... and it set the tone for a great meal ... i must confess, we gobbled up at that clam stew too :D

  2. Ooh, I'm seeing some of Jack's original favourites on the menu and some new items too. Happy Penang travels Sean.

    1. The Yum List: thanks - this was a couple of months back though - but it was a happy trip indeed, and jack's place, which is where we started, was a highlight! :)

  3. The food looks good! I like the capellini with caviar, simple but pretty.

    1. CK: ya, the capellini is the perfect sort of starter! :D

  4. Dishes look a lot more than being just tapas. Nice presentations, quite different from the rest...and oooo...caviar!!! @.@!!!

    1. Suituapui: yeah, chef jack definitely unleashes an impressive imagination here! :)
