McCafe @ Kota Damansara

Nearly two decades have passed since McDonald's opened its first coffee house in Melbourne; more than 1,400 McCafes worldwide later, Malaysia finally gets one, in the unlikely location of Kota Damansara.

McCafe is an extension of the existing McDonald's in this neighborhood; it's spacious, with a setting that's as bright and cheerful as the service team.

Coffee handcrafted by professionally trained baristas is what will lure bleary-eyed customers here starting seven a.m. everyday. Night owls, have a hoot _ McCafe is open through midnight.

A selling point: with cappuccinos available at RM4.50++ onwards, McCafe's beverages _ everything from steaming-hot Americanos and flat whites to ice-cold lattes and mochas _ cost probably half of what Starbucks might charge.

Satisfying? Die-hard coffee connoisseurs might not be lovin' it, especially not compared to the likes of Espressolab, but McCafe still seems like a value-for-money option, using freshly ground, medium-roasted Arabica beans that supply fair fragrance and body.

McCafe serves sugary stuff to pair with the caffeine; make your selection from chocolate and cheese cakes to brownies, cookies and mega-sized muffins.

Tasty enough; Big Mac buffs can also bring their favorite burgers and fries into McCafe.

Unsurprisingly, McCafe has expansion plans for Kuala Lumpur and Selangor _ expect more branches to spring up in Bandar Utama, SS15 Subang, Mutiara Damansara, Sunway Pyramid, Titiwangsa and Taman Connaught.

    1. Cindy: oh yeah, since there are mccafes in bangkok, singapore, etc, it makes sense to have it in KL too. i think the relatively low price of the coffee here will help them win many fans, though most coffee lovers will want to get their fix elsewhere =)

    1. Joe: oh yeah, apparently 1993 was the year of their start in australia. wonder if they'll have a 20th anniversary celebration. i guess they're more prevalent down under compared to asia. they have a lot of catching up to do in KL :D

    2. But I think those on tight budget would go for a cup of joe at McD and refill till the cup softens. Hehe.

    3. Chong: you're probably right. or gosh, maybe even the petrol stations that offer free coffee in the morning (there are two of those gas stations near my home!) =)

  11. I'll wait for one closer to me to open - Kota Damansara is a bit too far for me to go on a silly whim by myself. Where in Kota Damansara is it anyway?

I've been wondering what's taking so long for a McCafe to open here in Malaysia - Singapore's got theirs for ages already.

The sugary stuff does looks nice...

    1. Synical: ooh, here's the address _ jalan cecawi 6/18. it's maybe a five-minute drive from the sunway giza area. closer to the residential areas =) heh, i guess the mcd's folks in malaysia finally woke up to the possibility of making big bucks with coffee. and i guess it helps to keep their brand fresh too. i suppose some customers might come in here, get a big mac and then have a brownie for dessert :D

  21. Their coffee is kinda potent. I took one at 9pm and was pretty much unable to sleep till the next morning...

Can't wait for it to open in other branches since we do hang out at McD on mornings before before our random drives.

    1. Missyblurkit: yikes, i hope you didn't have to go to work the next morning! :D ya, it sounds like this branch is doing reasonably well, so hopefully they'll speed up the opening for the other branches (and maybe offer the coffee for drive-through convenience too!) :D
