High Tide @ Menara Taipan, Kuala Lumpur

High Tide swept us away with its sensational selection of seafood. This is one of KL's best new restaurants, likely to become the talk of the town soon.

It's no place for meat addicts; beef, chicken, lamb, pork and duck are almost absent from the menu. This is pure paradise for people pursuing oceanic pleasures, though dining here too often might drown us in debt (prices are comparable to Mandarin Oriental's Pacifica).

Marron with eggplant and green pea. Eating here was a crash course in seafood. We came in with only a theoretical idea of what marron is; we left with the knowledge that this Australian freshwater crayfish is the next best thing to lobster.

Smoked monkfish, shaved fennel & citrus dressing. Tender and mild-tasting.

Platter of (1) marinated king fish, duck liver & basil-wasabi sorbet, (2) king fish carpaccio, enoki mushroom & truffle, (3) king fish tartare, cucumber & rucola. We obviously have more learning to do, since we couldn't tell the difference between monkfish and king fish. Help!

Assortment of oysters (Irish Pacific, French Belon, French Fine de Claire).

Slow-baked pink snapper with oxtail, leek and celeriac. A fish with firm flesh and delicate flavour, outstandingly balanced by the oxtail's saltier taste.

Dover sole, sea aster and seafood emulsion. Hmmm, this kinda tasted like pink snapper too, though they looked clearly unalike.

Orange roughy, Belgian endives, savoy cabbage & watercress. The two of us were all fish-ed out by this point, but luckily, the servings weren't too heavy.

Epoisse de Bourgogne cheese tart with apple & beef bacon. A soft, savory treat.

Desserts were suitably light too, with the creme catalane with red fruit, yoghurt ice cream and passion fruit espuma bringing a sweet end to a memorable meal.

Lotsa bubbly helped of course. Conti Neri Prosecco di Prosecco Extra Dry.

Copa De Vino @ Subang Jaya

This tapas bar above La Cocina affords a bit more privacy than the restaurant.

The food here is the same as what La Cocina serves downstairs. Five versions of paella are available; we opted for the Cordero, brimming with tender, herb-marinated leg of lamb and veggies. Despite the lack of a crusty bottom, this was satisfyingly sticky and flavourful.

Sliced apples with hazelnut and raisins wrapped in filo pastry with Belgian chocolate, served warm with vanilla sauce and cinnamon ice cream.

Crepes filled with curd cheese and raspberries. Tasted surprisingly fresh.

Bud's rum & raisin and cookies & cream. The next best thing to Ben & Jerry's.

Guava juice & Barcelona Scream (tequila, kahlua, cinnamon ice cream, pineapple).

La Cocina's Sombrero (tequila, cointreau, mango juice, grenadine) and Spanish Fly (bacardi rum, blue caracao, hypnotiq, pineapple juice).

Tanner's @ Bukit Tunku

A hidden gem that deserves to draw more business. But then again, the lack of crowds here makes Tanner's the ideal destination for an intimate dinner.

Salmon fishcakes deep-fried in breadcrumbs and served with mushy peas. One of the finest fishcakes in town. Fresh, flaky and flavourful, retaining all the salmon's natural moistness.

Beef shin stew with root vegetables, herbs, porcini and cinnamon, slow-cooked in red wine with potato gnocchi. Pure comfort food that scarcely requires chewing. Maybe a bit too salty, but that's a minor complaint.

Mooncakes @ Shang Palace, Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur

Ping Pei White Truffle Dark Chocolate, Macadamia and Caramel Crunch. An amazing combo. The taste of truffles was present in every bite, enhancing the rich chocolate aroma.

Snow Skin Durian. Luscious, but durian mooncakes seem too common nowadays.

Lotus Cheese with Pandan. Am not a pandan lover, so this didn't rock my boat.

Crunchy Coconut with Honeycomb Custard. Hmmm, neither do I like coconut.

Mini lotus cheese with single yolk. Flawlessly and decadently smooth.

Jyu Raku @ Subang Jaya

The competition on this street is fierce, with four Japanese outlets within striking distance of each other. Jyu Raku holds its own with fairly decent fare.

Jyu Raku Roll. Salmon sashimi, egg omelette, salmon roe and other stuff wrapped in rice paper. Nice mix of tastes and textures.

Jyu Raku salad, labeled a Japanese yee sang. A hearty bowl that could satisfy two or three people. Plenty of goodies within, from assorted sashimi to unagi and marinated octopus.

Marinated hotaru squid and raw octopus with wasabi sauce. The squid had a weird, briny, almost foul flavour ... but we still liked it.

Rice paper roll of eel and avocado. Kinda tasted like soggy popiah.

Grilled oysters with mushrooms in a special sauce. Fresh and flavourful. Wish we could have ordered more of these.

Boiled taraba crab pressed sushi. Bland and overpriced. Skip this.

Envy @ SohoKL, Solaris Mont Kiara

The live band makes it tough to hold a conversation in this SohoKL club.

Luckily, the club has a secluded chill-out lounge called "Casa Endivia," which is shut away from the noise. Cigars and wines are available, but there's nothing to nibble on for now.

Singapore Sling and Pink Pussycat. The cocktails are cheap but kinda weak.

Slammer and Perfect Martini. Nope, the martini fell very far from perfection.

Blue Grass @ Asian Heritage Row

Asian Heritage Row's dining scene has been slowly dying, so we were excited when The Blue Grass Restaurant & Bar opened here this week. Sadly, it's not in the same league as the other outlets that have closed on this once-thriving row.

Blue Grass has a menu of local and Western offerings that seem too ordinary, even though the food itself is reasonably well-prepared and fairly priced. The taufu sumbat, stuffed with cucumber, carrots and bean sprout, served with Thai chilli sauce, tasted healthy but bland.

Lamb perattal, a dry, spicy curry with bread. Decent but unmemorable.

Mushroom fried rice. A rather hearty portion. Not too oily or salty, thankfully.

Singapore fried beehoon. Lacked wok hei, but generously filled with seafood.

Illusion (vodka, peach liqueur, melon liqueur, lime, pineapple juice) and Singapore Sling (gin, cherry brandy, lime juice, soda, grenadine, bitters).

Daikanyama's terrific lounge upstairs exudes a cool, classy vibe.
