Raintree @ Menara CIMB

By Aiman Azri

Sprouting up recently inside Menara CIMB, Raintree is a fresh oasis for Thai and Western cooking, blending both with a vibrant, feel-good perkiness. There's even an alfresco area for a splash of extra sunshine and breeziness to brighten up many workday meals.

We were here to sample Raintree's best-sellers, beginning with its popular Thai-tinged starters - naturally, a salad and a soup. The Thai Beef Salad (RM 23.90) is perfect for a balanced, nourishing lunch, with lots of red meat and crisp greens lightly accented with olive oil, parmesan cheese and a Thai dressing. The Seafood Soup with Tomato Broth (RM 21.90) is slurp-worthy too, its tomato base enlivened by Thai herbs, with more than sufficient squid and prawns to munch on.

On the Western front, the Grilled Salmon (RM 35.90) is a can't-fail crowd-pleaser, with its crispy exterior and moist, supple flesh - the fish is complemented with two sauces, a creamy lemon that brings a zing to the salmon, and a mix of tomato and tom yam for a punch and a kick.

Pizzas here emerge from the flames of a wood-fired oven, catering to customers who love their pizzas thin and crispy. A plain Pepperoni (RM 29.90) is simple but satisfactory, while the rest of the range includes the Margherita, the Vege Delight and the speciality Salmon pizza.

Raintree's kitchen commander, Chef Jas, has a personal hand in crafting these two pasta pleasures: The Spaghetti Soft-Shell Crab (RM 35.90) adds a substantial crunch to an aglio olio recipe with distinct nuances of olive oil, while the Spaghetti Green Curry (RM 37.90) is notable for being blanketed in the unmistakable Thai-spiced gravy, enhanced further with seafood.

There's still more to try, from mieng kam and Thai fish cakes to burgers, quesadillas and lamb shank.

Desserts also marry Eastern and Western elements: The Red Ruby Water Chestnut (RM 13.90) is that Thai classic that's terrific for cooling down, served here with a contemporary look, while the Choco Romano (RM 13.90) lets you dunk ice cream wafer sandwiches into a decadent dip of chocolate and coconut milk, for an indulgent end-of-meal treat.

Raintree's Apple Juice (RM 12) and Citron Presse (RM 15), a mix of Sprite and lime, will do the trick for quenching the thirst, but if you need a stiffer drink, there's a wide selection of beers, cocktails, liquors and Champagne. On Friday evenings, Chef Jas sets up a barbecue on the balcony, with an array of beef, squid, prawns, chicken wings, fish and satay to celebrate the start of the weekend. Live bands perform Wednesdays and Fridays.

Thanks to Raintree for having us.

  1. Tomato base? For a while, I thought that was curry. I love bread with curry.

  3. Bad experience!! Letter that was just sent last night to the Area Manager.

    Dear Mr Rezal

Further to the above subject matter would like to draw to your attention to a totally and utterly unacceptable experience encountered while trying to unwind after a week's work at Raintree @ Lvl2 CIMB Sentral just 3hours ago on Jan 19th, 2018.

Was at your outlet with a colleague  (despite the previous numerous negative comments) to check it out for ourselves as we were looking for a place for a Company event with the hope that the negative comments weren't true.

What started off as a happy evening was just spoiled by an incident which we felt could have been avoided if better attention and services were given.

We were shown to our seats at the cocktail table with PVC cladded/padded high chairs. Took our seats, ordered our drinks and snacks. Half an hour into our session, I felt that my jeans were wet. Stood up and to my horror true enough my jeans were soaked through! Not only mine but my colleague's as well. Imagine having to walk out to dinner with a wet patch!!!

Asked for your Manager which of course wasn't too pleased when being called upon. So Mr manager approached us, didn't offer to introduce himself to start off with let alone offer an apology with his expressionless face that gave an impression of 'what now?'

All he did was..touched the chair and went..oh..chair is wet.  Don't we all already know with our wet jeans??!! Offered no help no suggestions which obviously further angered us. Instead went on to say, lately it is raining so chairs are wet. So??? Is that our problem as customers??

We had to tell him he could have at least then checked the chairs before even set up! Only then did he say yah ok and uttered a very soft 'sorry' only after a good 5mins since he approached us.

Never mind...worst yet to come out of his mouth! So, what you want me to do? Was what he said! Come on as a so-called restaurant manager you are asking your customer that. Fine! I said..you are asking me?? OK..since you are asking me, I will walk out this minute and not pay.  And he had the cheek with is expressionless face and smart mouth answered, am OK if you want to walk out without paying!!! Boy you call this customer service??  Being a professional myself, I told him..I can do that but no,  I will pay for our bill. Only then did he offer another round of drinks. But will we still want to stay on at Raintree?? Obviously no!! ..u guys just lost 2 customers and a possible company event.

It didn't end there..when we asked what about the chairs, to our horror..didn't offer to change our chairs but only offered to place cushions over the wet chairs!! Just amazing!

And for your info, we left the place after paying in FULL for our bill.

For sure this incident will go viral and no wonder Raintree received so much negative comments.

    Good luck!
