Modern Society @ DC Mall

True to its name, Modern Society strives to carve a contemporary edge in everything from its design to its dishes - its founders have envisioned a habitat for social creatures to mingle over two levels called The Gallery & The Loft (comprising the main space & a lounge upstairs), with the centrepiece of a bar built of Greek marble beneath a light display hovering from on high.

Modern Society is primarily a watering hole, with a complete liquor selection to prove it, including the sort of signature cocktail selection that we gravitate toward, ranging from choices like the absinthe-fuelled Ach Tung to the siphon-crafted Scientist, served hot with a base of gin, Manuka honey, cinnamon, orange peels & more. We craved cool refreshments for a sultry Saturday night, so we sought out Shenanigans (RM39; beetroot, whisky, Parfait d'Amour, pineapple-&-chilli syrup, lemon) & Rum Runner (RM38; a house mix of rum with nutmeg, lime sherbet & juice), both of which proved nicely nuanced; knock back a few after checking out the kitchen's specialities, which comprise mirthful twists on familiar comfort fare - Scotch eggs are studded with salmon belly, fish roe & beef bacon, coupled with chipotle aioli & tomato salsa (RM10.90), while chicken burgers come with ramen buns that sandwich a miso-spiked patty, cheddar & caramelised onions, plus plenty of fresh fries (RM26.90).

Fish & chips also secure a makeover via Modern Society's Zesty Sea Bass, which surfaces with two tail-on fillets, strikingly crisp in a thin coating laced with Sichuan peppercorns, complemented by a house-made tartar sauce (RM25.90). For those of us who relish our grains, the menu's top temptations might be risotto with buttery foie gras in a goji berry broth with apple chutney sauce (RM45) & Peruvian-inspired rice mixed with cheese & egg, encircled by a gravied beef rump stew (RM25.90). All in all, Modern Society has the potential to evolve into an interesting venue. Service is welcoming & sufficiently proficient.

  1. I'd go for the fish and chips, sure is different from the usual and all the rest. I love places with high ceilings - at those where the ceiling is low, it tends to get unbearably noisy when the crowd comes in.

  2. Oh that's that new mall not far from BSC right? It looks empty from the outside. This place looks like fun though.

    1. The Yum List: you're right, it's only a five-minute drive from BSC, though the roads leading here are rather confusing! :)

  4. What...ramen buns? They look super crunchy! Ooo...I like that they have two floors...to serve drinkers and diners separately. Although I've liked the looks of the food at some watering holes, I always feel that I'm encroaching a drinker's space when I want to go there to eat only! :P

    1. Contact.ewew: heheh, it's OK, we drinkers don't mind sharing our space with diners! :)

  5. This place didn't train their workers on identifying their pastas and accidentally served my colleague a beef pasta instead of a mushroom one and she couldn't eat beef! Even after pointing this fact out to the management, all we got was a sorry. We were there for lunch and it took too long for the dishes to arrive and our lunch break became 1.5 hours. A long way to go for improvement

    1. CNSY: thanks for voicing that out - it sounds like teething problems that need to be fixed. our flow of food for dinner was pretty smooth, and we had no trouble with the staff, but your experience does sound frustrating, and i'd be unhappy too.

  6. Loving the contemporary look of the place! Seems to have a cool vibe to chill at for drinks, esp if they have some good music to fill the space with. Will definitely try them out soon!
