Garage 51 by Coffee Societe @ Bandar Sunway

The caffeine czars of Solaris Dutamas' CoffeeSociete have branched out to Bandar Sunway, unveiling a spin-off that brings another slice of Melbourne-flavored cafe culture to our suburbs.

Standing out on a street of auto workshops, Garage 51 hums with positive energy & friendliness, its exterior made striking with a wall splashed with fever-dream artwork (think Hosier Lane graffiti) & its interior a hive of funky flourishes (check out the oil-drums-turned-furniture).

The menu's made for brunching; this baked egg helps to brighten up our public holiday, served with sliced (chicken) chipolata, capsicum, cream & zucchini, veering toward extra-cheesy with parmesan & mozzarella. RM22+, perhaps a pinch pricier than expected.

Smoked salmon with avocado, salsa & cream cheese, sandwiched in a fluffy bagel (RM26+), providing a pleasant half-pound or so of fresh-tasting, finely balanced nutrition.

Honey muesli with walnuts & the perfect poached pear, sweetly ripe & soft without being mushy. RM20+; portions here seem suitable for folks wary of heavy meals.

Desserts take the familiar route trodden by many a purveyor of carrot & red velvet cakes.

No complaints about the Societe house blend; the latte (RM8.90+) works well, with a nod to those of us who like our beverages a little milkier than most.

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe single-origin specialty coffee's available too this week. RM15+.

It feels petty to mention teething issues, since everything will likely be rectified soon, but for now, note that Garage 51's air-conditioning isn't robust enough to counter the afternoon heat, exacerbated by a few flies that might trouble the table.

Still, we're optimistic about this venue; it's close enough to Sunway University that it could become predominantly a college-kid hangout (though some might balk at the food prices here), but with a little fine-tuning, Garage 51 has broad-appeal potential aplenty.

  1. With so much windows and natural light, I am not surprised by the flies. A good fly management system should sort them out. And yes, this is good news for me when I have to camp in Sunway on car days.

    1. Missyblurkit: yeah, i think they'll be able to get rid of the pesky flies before too long. insects are not welcome here, heh :D and ya, it could be convenient to have the car serviced at one of the workshops here, and stroll over to garage 51 for a tasty meal with coffee while waiting =)

    1. Ulric: yeah, maybe the rental here is high, etc, but the pricing does feel about 30 percent too steep for the food =)

    2. I don't think the rental is so high until they need to set that kind of price :/ see how other hawkers restaurants shop nearby survive.

  10. No wonder my friends sensing their kids to these collages are screaming, looks like lunch is at least $30 if not $40+ Ringgit. With 2 meals that is $100/day. But this place looks neat and clean with me liking the salmon avocado combi !

    1. Wong: yeah, probably not the kind of place that a typical college student should have lunch at every single day, heh. ya, a plate of food and a glass of coffee here will hit RM30, but that's ok for us adults in our 30s. and ya, this outlet has a nice look and i love the salmon + avocado too :D

  12. I'll have one of those perfect poached pears. Too bad abt the flies!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Baby Sumo: yeah, we quite enjoyed the pear, which is a surprise, since i actually don't love pears. maybe the flies were attracted to the pear, heh :D

    1. Cquek: yeah, the buzz is strong for this cafe, so i think it'll enjoy a healthy lunch crowd for the foreseeable future, especially on weekends =)

  14. I won't mind the pear dish.
But the prices are way too high, i mean even in Publika the baked eggs by The Red Bean Bag wasn't so pricy.
I do not know the rental here, but it can't be higher than Publika can it?
And bagels are fluffy? Aren't they supposed to be dense? Malaysian bagels heheh!

    1. Rebecca: yeah, am glad i ordered the pear dish :D i'm not sure what factors attributed to the prices here, but ya, they do feel steeper than anticipated. i think the coffee societe folks will get some feedback about that ... oh, the bagels here are more of the pillowy sort. quite nice actually, since i don't like overly chewy bagels, heh =)

    1. Ooi: i think it's crowded during weekend afternoons, but not sure about the evenings =) hmmm, i'm not familiar with the area, so i can't really describe any landmarks, since it's in the middle of rows of shophouses. thanks though, and i hope you'll be able to find this place and enjoy it =)

  21. Was very happy with my 1st 2 visits there. However, last 2 weeks i was there, i was a bit disappointed with their latte & mochatella...not sure if is the water rationing issues but they are serving it in a plastic cups. Taste wise, slightly too milky for me and lack of fresh bean taste.
