Bee Cheng Hiang: Bakkwa Mooncakes, Chess Mooncakes & more mid-autumn marvels

Bee Cheng Hiang's mooncakes shine brightly this year with a unique range of playful pleasures to treasure: From mooncakes laced with bakkwa and pork floss to mooncakes shaped like Chinese chess pieces, these creations bring a luminous loveliness to the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Order this month on beechenghiang.com.my and enjoy a RM64 rebate with a minimum spend of RM288 - Bee Cheng Hiang's Merdeka Online Sales will run until 31 August 2021.

Bee Cheng Hiang might be best known for its much-beloved bakkwa, so it's no surprise that its Signature Mooncakes showcase this distinctive delicacy, made with charcoal-smoked, premium pork.

The Signature Bakkwa Mooncake puts a twist on the traditional mixed-nuts mooncake, baked with assorted nuts, including almonds, cashews and walnuts, plus sesame and melon seeds and orange peels. You'll find bits of bakkwa in every bite, enhancing this gourmet mooncake with a gently savoury meatiness, making it extra full-bodied and full-flavoured.

For 2021, Bee Cheng Hiang has bolstered its selection with the Signature Floss Bakkwa Mooncake, pictured above. This newly launched recipe looks like a regular mooncake at first glance, but slice into it and you'll see a more complex medley of the classic mixed nuts, with slivers of bakkwa and strands of pork floss. Both bring a subtle boost of sweet-smoky flavour and a richer, exceptionally enjoyable texture.

We love how intricately and meticulously crafted Bee Cheng Hiang's mooncakes are.

The Mooncake Eight is another intriguing innovation, riffing on pure white lotus mooncakes with salted egg yolk. This has been symmetrically conceived for sharing, enabling us to easily and conveniently break it apart into eight pieces - no knives needed! Ideal if you can't wait to munch on the smooth white lotus paste, complemented robustly by salted egg yolk.

Also cute and charming are the Chess Mooncakes, mini mooncakes meant to look like Chinese chess pieces. Perfect for snacking, these come in flavours of Plain Lotus, White Lotus and Pumpkin - our favourite is the pumpkin, with an elegant earthiness to elevate the mooncake's mellow sweetness.

These Chess Mooncakes are the cornerstone of Bee Cheng Hiang's #ChessStackingChallenge - from now until 21 September 2021.

Bee Cheng Hiang's variety of mooncakes is vast, so there's something for everyone, from all-time favourites like Mixed Nuts Jin Hua Ham to the more health-conscious Plain White Lotus (Low Sugar). If you want to indulge, the Lotus 2 Yolks mooncake will definitely delight!

Our top recommendations include the Black Sesame White Lotus, pictured above, beautifully imbuing sesame's nuttiness into the mooncake, layering black sesame with white lotus in harmonious yin-yang style, and the Pandan Gula Melaka, a nectarous Malaysian take on a tropically aromatic mooncake, transformed from a typical snow-skin into a baked mooncake.

We respect how these mooncakes clearly convey top-quality ingredients, from carefully sourced lotus seeds for the lotus paste (tasty and creamy without being overwhelmingly sweet or cloying) to the real pandan and gula Melaka (used to make the Pandan Gula Melaka mooncake from scratch).

Bee Cheng Hiang also offers Mooncake Biscuits (Gong Zai Biscuit), evoking moreish mooncake crusts. These emerge in striking designs, from the Arowana (Jin Long Yu) to the dragon-like Kirin, as well as Big Piglets, Small Piglets, Little Rabbits, and Koi Fish - terrific for families with young children, or as gifts to cheer up your loved ones. A fun, gorgeously golden-brown alternative to regular biscuits and cookies.

Check out these mooncakes at your nearest Bee Cheng Hiang retail outlet or order them online.

Purchases of two or four mooncakes come in exclusive golden mooncake boxes - the box set of four opens nicely like a closet chest, making it a marvellous memento to keep for storage.
