Lankan Cafe @ Petaling Jaya

Food that feels like coming home: With a Sri Lankan chef in the kitchen, this family-run restaurant offers casual comfort food that brings a bit of Colombo to the Klang Valley - the menu evolves throughout the day, from breakfast to lunch to tea & dinnertime, but if you're here in the afternoon, try the thick, terrifically textured puttus & the tender, fresh-tasting idiyappams, partnered with distinctly spiced dal, rich curries (we like the juicy squid, as well as the deep, dark chicken) & vegetarian-friendly condiments (we love the robust fried bitter gourd) in set meals that mostly clock in somewhere between RM13.90 to RM18.90.

Skip the pol roti though (too stodgy & chewy) & save space instead for the egg appams, served warm with a fluffy, santan-luxuriant centre surrounded by thin, crisp edges. Desserts boast a mom-baked feel, with the green velvet cake & a dense traditional butter cake among the attractions, with sukku malli ginger-coriander hot coffee easily the ideal accompaniment,

  1. I like 'em puttus...but sweet, with dessicated coconut and gula Melaka. Would love to try them this wai, Lanakan style. In fact, I would love to try all - quite different from any Indian delights that I have had before.

    1. Suituapui: I guess the fun thing about puttus is how versatile they are in terms of food pairings :) ya, it's interesting to try to understand the similarities and sometimes subtle differences between the food in different parts of South Asia :)

    1. Phong Hong: it actually tasted pretty much the same as a red velvet. I figure the only real difference is the colouring used :)
