The Morning After @ Ativo Plaza, Pavilion & Jaya One

Patrons of The Morning After need not fear a walk of shame; this is a pretty nice new cafe brand that launched three outlets recently, at Ativo Plaza in Bandar Sri Damansara & the Pavilion mall in Bukit Bintang as well as Penang's international airport. Another Klang Valley branch is slated to soon open at Jaya One.

We visited the Ativo location, since that one showcases The Morning After's most comprehensive selection (the Pavilion branch is basically a kiosk), with all-day breakfasts that genuinely run all day. Customers can stroll in at 9pm & still be able to order the sunny-side-up with subtly spicy corned beef & herbed potatoes (RM16.90 before taxes).

The Morning After's 'Power-Packed Omelette' comes stuffed with chicken strips, mushrooms, peppers & cheese, served with buttered toast & roasted potatoes (RM16.90).

Elaborate Eggs Benedict (RM16.90), comprising two poached eggs, smoked salmon, baby spinach, alfalfa sprouts & hollandaise sauce on a sourdough muffin, accompanied by potato crisps.

The fritatta's thick & meaty, the service is friendly; the combo works well enough to make for a happy meal.

The Morning After also prides itself on poppyseed bagel sammies, brimming with the likes of egg mayo & salmon (RM17.90).

Burgers & pastas are offered too; the former takes the form of this one with a breaded Dungeness crab patty, mango-&-corn salsa & daikon (RM26.90). The Morning After has clearly put hard work into making its menu a little less ordinary; it's a respectable effort, though several of these recipes could still be fine-tuned for a more thoroughly satisfying eating experience. Thankfully, the management seems open to feedback, so we''re hopeful for the future.

Coffee comes in both serious & light-hearted shapes. Enjoy an espresso (the cafe currently serves a house blend of Mandheling, Sigri & Santos, & plans to eventually roast its beans on-site at this spacious Ativo Plaza outlet) or a salted caramel macchiato.

    1. Ulric: yeah, couldn't resist ordering a crab burger ... and the eggy dishes were all basically satisfactory. their Pavilion kiosk doesn't have a full kitchen though, so there are only bagel sandwiches and the more basic dishes there :)

    2. Myself as well, Sean. Sometimes I may have just fruits for breakfast, so at those times I may wish to have eggs, smoked salmon, bacon, or whatever, in the evening. :)

    3. Linda: eggs in the evening; that's something i can empathise with totally :)

  14. We were there this morning. Got to know about them from your blog. However, it was really dissapointed. We orders bagel & all day breakfast. They served the bagel with butter spread on top together with butter, jam and cream cheese. The bagel was really not so good as it is really not a bagel. Guess that's why they said that it's their own type of bagel. It just doesn't taste well. The all day breakfast was really not up to standard too. The sausages, the beans and mushroom, all ingredient that they used wasn't up to standard. Taste far away worst than Departure lounge with half of the price they charged. Our mocha taste more like double chocolate. In overall, we don"t like this place. The ambience was nice but it is not somewhere that we will go back.

    1. Sherlyn: yikes, i hope you made your feedback clear to the management here and that they make the effort to improve on those points. but it's true that some of the recipes here could use some tweaking.

  15. Decided to try out this cafe after your review. I went to The Morning After last Saturday night with the FamBAYM! We went there pretty late tho, about 10 to 10,30, and they were still serving. I got myself a Crab Meat Burger out of the sake of curiosity as to what a Crabby Patty might taste like..and i loved how fresh the crabmeat was - all mashed and marinated, rolled shaped and fried to perfection! Their coffee is also pretty awesome - and the affogato is top notch! Like the best i've ever had. Will be back!

btw, follow me on instagram @elesyn ^^ hehe #selfpromo

  17. Dear Jessica Alba,

Firstly, please allow us to apologise for the inconvenience caused. The Management of Pavilion has requested for us to close our doors until they are satisfied with the design of the outlet, after which they ill give us the approval for trade. Therefore we are not allowed to operate until our concept is deemed satisfactory to them. In the meantime, please do pay a visit to our flagship outlet at Ativo Plaza. We are also opening our doors at Jaya One this week, do come by for a cuppa coffee.

Thank you and have a good weekend.

  19. Had lunch at their Jaya One outlet. Granted it’s only been open for 2 days, there still shouldn’t be this many hiccups for an establishment with preceding branches.

Service was really slow, our plain water took 20 mins to arrive; kitchen was severely understaffed (should never open for business when you’re not ready); we ordered 2 pastas and after a good 45 mins of waiting, they told us they can only make 1 (due to the lack of ingredients); and most disappointing is the small portion you get for the price you’re paying. Ordered the Eggs Benny (RM16.90) and it came in one tiny serving, while most restaurants (even Dome) serve double that quantity for the same price or less.

  20. First try at Ttdi branch today. We ordered the buffalo wings and the Mexican nachos, it is such a small portion and taste horrible !! We asked for the extra mince beef for the nachos , they serve us with just a sauce without the mince beef in there. If you don't know what is the nachos should be serve with please take off from the menu. Overall very disappointed ! Good luck with it!
