Living Food & Earth Food

Need an interlude from festive feasting? Head to Living Food for a plate of guacamole _ creamier than butter but far healthier, fueled by avocado-powered nutrition & gussied up with tangy mango salsa & triangles of dehydrated rosemary bread.

We packed a roast duck sandwich to go, featuring carrots, cranberries & seeds in Living Food's own focaccia. Looked wilted a few hours later, but still tasted more interesting & wholesome than Subway, with fresh meat instead of processed cuts.

The salad selection here is surprisingly compact, comprising only four or five recipes, but we imagine that bona fide vegetarians would have no beef with this mix of Napa cabbage, avocado, cranberries, cucumber, seeds & sprouts in ginger dressing.

Desserts are mainly dairy-free items with unrefined ingredients. Living Food's almond milk brownie is full of grainy goodness, but what tickles our taste buds is the Nanaimo _ a no-bake, triple-layer Canadian confection with a crumbly base, a pudding-like midsection & a thin topping of dark custard.

Japanese drip coffee & house-blend chai tea.

Another health food outlet that keeps us coming back: Earth Food, which now has an ecologically friendly car wash where our Myvi can be scrubbed with biodegradable cleansing products.

A cozy little plant shop has also opened here, perfect for fans of flora.

Feed the fish! Check out this pool where our finned friends swim. Be sure to ask Earth Food's proprietors for some bread to toss them.

Feed the humans! Charcoal noodles fried with sesame oil, a guilt-reduced substitute for greasy hawker concoctions. More flavorsome than expected.

Stir-fried red cabbage & walnuts. Or is it purple? OK, so red cabbage is purple cabbage.

Potentially even more doctor-approved than frozen yogurt, Earth Food serves eggless ice cream, using cane sugar for a lower glycemic index.

Flavors include decaffeinated coffee, Belgian chocolate, vanilla, peppermint with almond candy, as well as nutmeg with rum & raisin (think eggless eggnog).

The paintings on these walls are all for sale. Ten percent of proceeds go to the Pusat Kebajikan Good Shepherd Teenage Center.

Wine made with organic grapes, but costing not much more than regular vintages.

And with this entry, Eat Drink KL marks three years in existence. After more than 1,200 posts, we haven't withered ... yet.
