Maru Shiok! at myNEWS: Nostalgic Malaysian childhood treats with a Japanese twist

From Sambal Bilis Onigiri to Chicken Potato Curry Sandwiches, myNEWS Malaysia's Maru Kafe is taking customers on a nostalgic trip filled with childhood treats throughout July 2021, with a Japanese twist to tickle your taste buds.

This month's Maru Shiok! menu spans ready-to-eat, halal-certified takeout meals, convenient for the family with freshly baked, flavourfully cooked fare for a fun perspective on casual Malaysian favourites - true to the tagline, 'Maru Make My Day.’

If you're seeking an affordable full lunch or dinner for under RM10, Maru Kafe's Ginger Chicken with Salted Bean (RM9.90) promises tender chunks of steamed chicken in a lightly sharp and spicy sauce, partnered with spring onions, garlic flakes and sautéed vegetables, complete with rice for a recipe that's reminiscent of traditional Chinese staples. Served bento-style like Japanese comfort food, this will take less than a minute to reheat this at home for tasty sustenance.

Maru Shiok’s special onigiri for July showcases the skills of seasoned Japanese chefs who mastermind Maru Kafe’s menu.

The Nasi Ayam Onigiri (RM3.50) hits all the notes it aims for, living up to its promise as a hand-held nasi ayam, wrapped in a seaweed sheet.

The Sambal Bilis Onigiri (RM3.50) channels pyramid-packed nasi lemak bungkus, with a fiery sambal that’s balanced out by the nori.

Be sure to check out the Maru Bakes section for more Maru Shiok! All of Maru Kafe’s baked produce is crafted fresh everyday with Japanese flour.

Whether you like it sweet or savoury, there's something for you here. The Mango Crater Bun (RM2.90) is a quick, wallet-friendly snack with a mellow tropical fruitiness, encased in a craggy, crumbly bun.

The Sambal Bilis Donut (RM3) is inspired by Pau Sambal, transformed into a playful contemporary doughnut, stuffed with anchovies in spicy sambal.

Whether you're a kid or an adult, there's no resisting the Chicken Potato Curry Sandwich (RM4.60) - Malaysians love dipping bread into curries, so Maru Kafe realised the curry could be turned into a spread. This sandwich replicates the experience in a clean, fuss-free fashion, layered and loaded with a rich curry that satisfyingly features chicken and potatoes galore.

Don't leave without trying the Okinawa Sweet Potato soft serve (RM2.99), milky and smooth. You can have this soft serve in a cup, a cone, or as a chigiri, filled up on top of a bun, evoking bike-riding ice cream sellers who offered ice cream in bread (RM4.99).

All of these are available this month at myNEWS outlets that have a Maru Kafe. myNEWS members can enjoy these these promotional items at a 20% discount.
