Bru & Mase Cafe Bistro, The Campus Ampang

What happens when a George Town-born Penangite and his Jakarta-raised wife launch a new restaurant, naming it after their two young sons?

Bru & Mase is the Malaysian-Indonesian couple’s latest labour of love in The Campus Ampang, bringing together their family’s favourite street-fare flavours in satisfying style, spanning the Straits of Malacca to the shores of Java.

The Char Kwetiau is fierce with heat, slicked with chicken fat in the frying, spiked with prawn head oil in the chilli mix, scrambled with creamy duck egg, packed with prawns, squid, crab meat and cockles.

Brightly Balinese, the Urap-Urap is clean and convincing with freshly blanched veggies, sweet with coconut that’s spiced, grated and toasted, gorgeously lifted with galangal and kaffir leaves.

Representing Bandung, the Batagor Siomay is lip-smacking with crispy-fried tenggiri fish paste dumplings, with tofu doused in dense peanut sauce.
