Parklife, Bangsar South

By EDKL Writer A.A.

Honest produce and wholesome cooking go hand-in-hand through this Parklife: Bangsar South's latest restaurant is a hive for healthy eating that emphasises the pleasures of playful vegetable recipes. Looking as much a farm as a park, this perky venue is a labour of passion by Penang-born chef Ling, returning to his homeland after decades of honing his craft everywhere from London to Moscow to Osaka.

Mediterranean vibrancy meets Middle Eastern vibes throughout much of the fare here; the bounty of Parklife's harvest is spread out as a cornucopia of colourful salads for customers to view before ordering, while proteins are prepared to order in the kitchen.

The best lunchtime bet is the afternoon set, clocking in at RM28 for one protein, two salads and a soup of the day, each plated individually to let them shine on their own merit.

These creations prove balanced and buoyant: Grilled mackerel, fresh and fleshy, benefits from the uplift of celery, olives and raisins (RM12 on its own), while butternut squash is made punchy with feta cheese and herbs (RM10); a bowl of fennel receives respect with a garnishing of grapes and sumac for a sprightly, zesty kick (RM10). Tomato soup, tasty and textured, tinged with onions and oregano, rounds out the RM28 set with some flatbread.

Beverages maintain the virtuous theme, spanning the Mas Des Tannes Classic Rouge organic red wine (RM26) to Iced Vegan Chocolate that's not quite as deliciously decadent as regular sinful chocolate (RM13).
