Tiny Temptress @ Telawi, Bangsar

Temptation comes in many shapes & sizes: Telawi's latest dessert parlour might be tiny in both its name & pastel-pigmented space, but it works hard to punch above its weight in terms of creativity, charm & cheeriness. Founder Wendy Loh & her team first fired up their ovens as an online baking business in 2013 before launching their first physical cafe in Sri Petaling this year; now, their second outpost in less than six months is open too, spreading the gospel of ganaches, gelees & glazes in Bangsar.

Tiny Temptress' cutely crafted treats have attracted many curious customers through sheer visual allure alone - the Choux Au Craqueline (RM14) is probably the prime example, taking the classic French cream puff & transforming it into an Instagram magnet that evokes a peeping birdling, with mango cream cheese & Mandarin orange sauce embedded in the crunchy pastry - note though that this one might not be available in December as the cafe is rolling out a separate Christmas selection of seasonal cakes. No worries - look for the Bear Necessities (RM14), another creature-comfort creation, one that Mowgli might love, with oolong-infused dark chocolate mousse blanketing a core of passion fruit ganache & chocolate marzipan sponge.

From macarons in unorthodox flavours like salted egg yolk, lychee rose, mint, milk orange & caramelised white chocolate to marshmallows & madeleines, Tiny Temptress' repertoire spans both the basic essentials & the more elaborate entremets - the latter includes signatures like The Sweetheart (RM14; yoghurt mousse, raspberry gelee & chocolate ganache on a biscuit base), Cloud Nine (RM14; a chocolate lover's fantasy of choc mousse, choc marzipan sponge, choc streusel & choc feuilletine, blanketed with brulee marshmallow), The Temptress (RM16; a dual-topped tart layered with raspberry curd, chocolate glaze, white chocolate rose whip & baked almond cream), L'Affection (RM16; a slick-surfaced heart of lychee cream & almond joconde sponge in strawberry gelee) & the Lychee Berry Tart with lemon cream & frangipane on a handmade shell (RM16).

Tiny Temptress is also showcasing a high tea promo set to conclude 2016 - this very pretty tray comprises a madeleine, macaron, petite cake & cup of TWG tea for RM33. The choice of cake is L'Affection or The Red Apple, a Yuletide special of spice-poached apple with dacquiose, caramel & honey mousse on a gingerbread cookie base. Thanks to Tiny Temptress for a sweet supper - the cafe opens at 9am & closes at midnight daily, making cakes possible both before lunch & long past sunset.

Bowery Kitchen & Bar @ Publika

For patrons who know the Bowery brand mainly by its NYC-inspired deli in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, this new flagship restaurant & bar at Publika should prove a pleasant surprise, firing up a full-fledged contemporary dining experience that stretches from globe-spanning brunch fare to gourmet soul-food meals & gorgeous craft cocktails, measured out amid a sleek, stylish setting.

Bowery's breakfasts, served 8am through 6pm, turn out to be a bright spark - we especially like how flavours & flourishes from the Americas have found their way here, from the Southern U.S. inspiration of the Shrimp & Grits, cushioning Cajun-spiced prawns with creamy-soft grits, plus sauteed pumpkins & a runny egg, for a bowl of comforting bliss (RM32), to the Mexican inflection of the Breakfast Burrito, stuffed with scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, avocado, garlic rice & black bean salsa (RM27).

For customers seeking to sin, the kitchen obliges with guilty pleasures galore - the Lobster Mac & Cheese is everything we'd desire of this dish, loaded with tender macaroni in a superior four-cheese sauce, textured with fleshy lobster tail & baby peas (RM59). For a lighter snack to share, there's salted egg yolk chicken 'popcorn' available for dinner, competently crisp & juicy, its unmistakable savouriness balanced with cilantro & a Thai honey dip (RM23).

Pizzas & burgers might sound like typical tropes, but Bowery Kitchen determinedly goes the distance to punch up the panache - here, you can pile your pizza with your own customised ensemble of toppings; we chose BBQ beef brisket, two ravishingly wobbly eggs, spinach, aubergines, olives, roma tomatoes & bell peppers, generously blanketing a base smeared with white garlic sauce, for a fulfilling, flavour-packed pizza (RM33). Bowery's sink-your-teeth-into-this burger is also a behemoth, stacked with not one but two uber-thick, house-built patties, one made of shrimp & the other beef - a surf-&-turf in a burger (RM49).

Desserts & drinks showcase a dash of distinctiveness too - wrap up your visit with the banana tacos, a beautiful mess complemented by cream cheese, butterscotch chips, crumble & chocolate drizzle (RM23), or linger over a cocktail or three (RM42 each for the specialities), including unusual suspects such as the very local Sago Melaka (white rum, sago, palm sugar syrup), Brooklyn Blackout (creme de cacao, frangelico, chocolate mousse, chocolate syrup) & Margarita Malaya (tequila, orange curacao, fresh lime juice, & rojak syrup with a tamarind tang). Our thanks to Bowery Kitchen & Bar for having us here.
