Trend-watchers, take note: Pies have transformed into one of the Klang Valley's must-eat temptations for 2014. Customers seeking a slice of the hot new thing to hit town are certain to throng A Pie Thing, which opens in Damansara Utama this week, coincidentally on the same month as The Humble Pie Co's launch in PJ's Section 17.
It's not too challenging to spot A Pie Thing's eye-catching signboard beckoning to motorists on the LDP. Step inside & survey shelves of freshly baked pastry pleasures _ both savoury & sweet _ prepared by a trio of twentysomethings, Taylor's University alumni Alex, Chrissane & Irene (with indispensable help from their friends).
For now, A Pie Thing opens 4pm-11pm, Tuesdays through Sundays; come early, since scarcely 60 pies are served every evening (A Pie Thing expects to expand its hours & selection eventually). Leonidas Belgian chocolates are also available.
We're fans of A Pie Thing's savoury selection, stuffed with the likes of beef, chicken, lamb, or even chili con carne with cheese or spinach with assorted veggies. The kitchen constructs its creations with shortcrust pastry, prudently shunning puff pastries.
What makes these pies extra-delicious is how they're served, with hot, hearty & creamy toppings of mashed potatoes & peas & gravy, turning each portion into unabashed, unavoidable comfort food that'll clog your social network feed for some time to come. These are named 'The Mashacre,' costing RM17.90 nett for one pie with a beverage.
The lamb's convincingly tender, the chili con carne works well & even the spinach is surprisingly satisfying, all making for a mouthwatering mess. A Pie Thing is nonetheless still fine-tuning these recipes (some could use an added dimension of flavour) & expects to experiment with sourdough & herb-tinged crusts eventually.
The sweet pies are interesting too, with a subtly more sugary crust & varieties that range from a warm S'mores-inspired one with Belgian chocolate & roasted marshmallows ...
... to another with cream cheese & green tea (the filling could be fluffier _ a matter of preference, since some patrons might enjoy this one's denseness), as well as apple crumble & lemon curd pies (the former can be served with vanilla ice cream) ...
... plus one with a near-molten centre that showcases the increasingly ubiquitous Nutella. Each dessert pie is RM9.90.
A Pie Thing serves coffee (espresso at RM5, latte for double that), but the outlet's true highlight lies in what its name promises.
