Ramadan Buffets: Ahh-Yum by Kampong Kravers

It might take a village to cook up a kenduri, but if hometown flavours are what you're craving this Ramadan, Ahh-Yum promises buffet dinners this month that bring the balik kampung spirit to Bukit Damansara every evening, a taste of traditional cooking to whet the appetite for Aidilfitri.

For fans of Ahh-Yum, the buka puasa spread offers the opportunity to sample numerous temptations not available on the restaurant's regular a la carte menu.

If lamb is your one true culinary love, the buffet will rekindle that romance with unlimited helpings of Grilled Lamb, enlivened with a house-made air asam sauce that's aromatic with kerisik and coconut paste, a beautiful marriage of robust-tasting meat with a tangy companion. It may be worth coming simply for the kambing - especially since Ramadan won't return until April 2020.

Ahh-Yum's mascot is a chicken on the run, so it's no surprise that fowl plays a pivotal part in this buffet, with a preparation to please every palate. Prefer your chicken crisp and savoury? The Ahh-Yum Goreng Berempah will keep you scooping up another serving. If you like it spicy, with a sea of kuah to flood your rice, the Ahh-Yum Masak Lemak Cili, Ahh-Yum Masak Kicap and Kari Ahh-Yum will stir up sheer satisfaction, channeling the creamy comfort of culinary classics.

Head here with loose-fitting clothes, since a bazaar's worth of a banquet beckons. The selection is extensive to the point of being encyclopedic, spanning land to sea, from Daging Salai Masak Lemak Cili to Asam Pedas Ikan, Lamb Masala to Sambal Udang Petai, Ahh-neka Ulaman to Telur Masin, Bubur Daging to Bubur Pulut Hitam, with bowls of Curry Mee to round out the repertoire, plus basmathi rice, fried mee and spaghetti bolognese for carbs. What stands out is the sense of skill and care poured into each portion, reflecting a respect for recipes that have endured the test of time.

If there's space to spare for snacks and sweets, the counters await with cekodok pisang, lamb samosas, sago, apam, seri muka, freshly sliced fruits and tofu Ahh-Yum (tauhu bergedil), washed down with teh tarik, the signature Sirap 3 Sekawan (with lemon, limau nipis and limau kasturi) and a house-made lemongrass pandan ginger beverage. Vibrant flavours make this feast feel festive indeed.

The buffet costs RM55.90 for adults or RM39.90 for children below 12 years old. It pays to be an early bird at Ahh-Yum - book your meal at least three days in advance for a 10 percent discount.

Diners are welcome to linger on for fellowship with their family and friends - the Teh Lepas Terawikh features a series of a la carte tidbits from 930pm through 11pm, including cekodok cempedak, cekodok pisang, pisang goreng with ice cream, bubur kacang merah, bubur pulut hitam, moist chocolate cake, pineapple sugee cake and banana cake.

Note that the art gallery next door has been done up village-style for Ahh-Yum's patrons, with a prayer room at one end, partitioned for men and women.

Many thanks to Ahh-Yum by Kampong Kravers for bringing the kampung to us.
