Tangkak's culinary pride - beef noodles, famously served at Solok Street in the southern town - has extended its legacy to the Klang Valley in recent years with restaurants helmed by the family of its original shop's founders. The newest branch of Tangkak Beef Noodles is at Ampang, offering bowl after bowl of time-honoured recipes fine-tuned through two generations.
The traditional halal beef noodles offer customers the opportunity to choose exactly what they want in each serving: You can select a bowl completely topped with tenderloin (RM16.90 for a regular portion), tendons (RM21.90), stomach (RM11.90), beef balls (RM10.90), or a mixture of two, or best of all, the all-encompassing 'Sup Campur' (RM19.50), which comprises a bounty of every component in its hefty fleshiness or gelatinous glory, soaked in a hot herbal broth, potently robust with beefy nuances.
The variety of noodles is also noteworthy - thick & tender handmade mee, or mihun, lai fun or koay teow, are among the options to complete a satisfyingly balanced meal of energising carbs & nourishing protein. Comfort fare, pure & uncomplicated.
If you're really into beef, the top pick is a unique steamboat constructed entirely with bovine parts - all beef, all the way; this serving for two costs only RM25 & can easily be a full dinner with a side of rice. The beef tastes fresh, with deep, clean dimensions, matched with a light, elegant soup; there are also larger portions for three to four (RM35) or five to seven (RM45).
Snacks here prove equally well-executed - the fried tenderloin (RM8.50) is deliciously enjoyable, with strips of juicy meat crusted with crisply brittle batter, while the steamed enoki mushrooms (RM6.50) are marvellously moreish, fragrant with garlic & fiery with chillies, washed down with familiar favourites like cincau soya, honey lemon or longan beverages. We left with the feeling of fulfilment that comes from a hearty, heart-warming meal; many thanks to Tangkak Beef Noodles for hosting us.
