Flower power: Delectable by Su, one of KL's top makers of designer cakes, has crafted beautiful new creations that became available beginning this month - Delectable Buttercream Floral Cakes.
These cakes deserve to blossom into a big hit, crowned with softly coloured vanilla buttercream posies, hearkening back to vintage hand-piping techniques with Italian-influenced meringue buttercream.
It takes up to three hours to painstakingly complete the piping for each irresistible, nostalgia-imbued six-inch cake (RM180), comprising posies of between 10 & 15 shades each, constructed with pure butter & no shortening, with a light hint of sugar.
Three varieties are available: Elizabeth (inspired by Ms. Taylor), a yellow butter cake with raspberry filling; Amelia (Earhart), another yellow butter cake, with lemon curd filling; & Scarlett (O'Hara), a chocolate cake with dark chocolate ganache filling.
To pretty to eat? Well worth sampling though: Contemporary bakers rarely make cakes like these very much. The meringue buttercream frosting looks fabulous & tastes luxurious, like rich whipping cream, a lovely change from the more typical fondant.
So outside, the topping is thick, soft & smooth; inside, the cake is dense, moist & subtly salted. Altogether terrific, these are now available at all of Su's branches in The Gardens Mall & Pavilion.
Want to win these cakes for free? Delectable by Su is holding a contest on Instagram, with one winner chosen each week throughout October: Take a photo of yourself at any of Su's branches with a floral theme (for example, wearing a floral outfit, holding a flower or with a flower drawing), post it on Instagram & tag @delectablebysu
Basic cupcake versions of the Delectable Florals are available at RM15 per piece; somehow the whole ones seem to taste more satisfying, though that could be pure imagination on our part - we like the extra frosting & bigger bites of luscious cake.
Delectable by Su has two outlets at The Gardens (on Level 2, near Robinsons, & on LG, near Cold Storage) & another one at Pavilion (on Level 6, next to Times Bookstore).
If you're eating at Su's flagship outlet in The Gardens, have an affogato, one of KL's more moderately priced ones at RM7.
Bonus news: Delectable By Su is constructing a new outlet in Seputeh (near Siu Siu) housed in a three-storey, custom-built bungalow that aims to be a terrific venue for special events. It'll also contain a dessert cafe that'll open till late, ideal for those late-night sugar cravings. Expected to open after Chinese New Year 2015.
2015 Update: Glasshouse Dessert Cafe is now open.
