Golden Bites Durian Cheesecakes & Duurio Durian Crepes

Golden Bites’ Mini Durian Cheesecakes bring together the king of fruits and the perennially popular cake in one strikingly doughnut-shaped dessert.

The topping is reputedly a blend of 70% organic durian and 30% cheese - it's vibrantly aromatic and unmistakably ripe and pulpy, smoothened out somewhat with the cheese.

This might look like a doughnut, but it’s cheesecake through and through, with a crispy-crumbly base that complements the creamy star of the show. When we ordered earlier this year, a box of four Mini Durian Cheesecakes went for RM56.90. To order, WhatsApp 017-848-1249

Promising three varieties of durian crepes, Duurio is a triple threat for durian devotees, who'll likely love these plump pancakes packed with cream and either D24 or Musang King fruit.

The basic Durian Crepe is a standout, layered with dense cream and potent, pulpy-textured durian inside a thin crepe (RM15). The Durian Pandan Crepe is equally enjoyable, made extra-Malaysian with its fragrant pandan-infused crepe skin (RM15).

Duurio's bestselling novelty is the Durian Crepe Cheese Leleh, flaked with cheese on top for a savoury-sweet indulgence that works wonderfully (RM18). These crepes come in packs meant to be frozen; leave them at room temperature for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Cork & Cleaver, Bukit Tunku

If you're game for dining outdoors amid greenery galore, Cork & Cleaver might be your next new favourite haunt, especially if meat is your sustenance of choice.

Start with the salmon hinava - inspired by the Sabah Kadazan-Dusun people's equivalent of ceviche - featuring raw cubed salmon cured with fresh lime, ginger, bitter gourd and bird's eye chillies for a zesty fish dish (RM39) and the steak tartare of freshly ground Angus tenderloin beef with onions, capers, pepper and Worcestershire sauce, topped with a free-range egg yolk, for a true taste of a cherished classic (RM39).

Cork & Cleaver is both a butchery and a grill, so the highlight of the meal will come from the chiller. Choose from Australian 200-day grain-fed Black Angus cattleman's cutlets to Japanese Omi A5 striploin - we picked the Argentinian pasture-fed rib eye, prepared medium-rare; at RM20 per 100 grams (with a RM25 cooking fee), this was one of our most worthwhile steaks at any restaurant this year, beautifully done with a crusty bite and succulent, sizzling chew, rounded out with no fewer than four sauces (chimichurri, jus, blue cheese and Diane). Pair with house pours at a reasonable RM30 per glass.

Cork & Cleaver
Lot A-2, Taman Tunku, Off, Jln Langgak Tunku, Bukit Tunku, 50480 Kuala Lumpur. Daily, 10am-10pm. Tel: 012-482-7494

Michelle Young, Bukit Jalil

A visit to Bukit Jalil's new Michelle Young bakery-cafe in the morning is a blissed-out balm for the sweet-loving soul, with the scent of fresh-from-the-oven cookies and cupcakes in the air. While this space currently only offers takeouts and deliveries, it should eventually turn into a charming spot for teatime treats.

Banish those chocolate cravings with a choice of chocolate chip or triple chocolate cookies (RM12 each), plus a slice of dark chocolate sea salt cake (RM15). The cookies are chunky, the cake is thick, all dark, deep and dense, their moistness bordering on a fudgy lusciousness, with the sea salt helping to balance the sheer chocolate richness.

If you're picking only one of these three? Make it the chocolate chip cookie, loaded with creamy chips.

Our favourite cookie here is the S'mores, beautifully buttery with gooey marshmallows and crisp almonds making for a melty, moreish ensemble (RM12). The Matcha Nutella Hazelnut is the relatively unusual cookie, but it should work well for folks seeking a more uplifting cookie that still boasts a dash of decadence (RM15).

Other temptations include cupcakes stuffed with strawberry jam and capped with cream cheese (RM12) and scones with caramel sauce (RM6.50). Michelle Young also whips up bombolone-style doughnuts in irresistible-sounding varieties like pistachio, corn, Nutella or vanilla, but unfortunately, those weren't ready when we visited.

C-1-8, Aurora Place, Bukit Jalil, 57000 Kuala Lumpur. Open Wednesday-Monday, 1030am-6pm.
