Headspace, SS15 Subang Jaya

Headspace has its heart in the right place, offering a comfortable space where customers can work more effortlessly with their minds at ease. Its founders have gone to great lengths to craft this thoughtful sanctuary in Subang, even travelling more than 2,500 kilometres to source for their ideal furnishings; the result is a lovely hive of productivity where even the busiest bees can feel their souls revived and liberated, sending them back into the world as butterflies soaring free.

Since our focus is food, we're happy to report that there's no lack of fuel for the body here, comprising a free flow of cakes and cookies on the counters, bread with Nutella, ice cream in the freezer, and coffee and tea, of course; Headspace is meticulous about every element, including relying on a local roaster for its coffee beans. All this, plus the perks of high-speed Wi-Fi, for RM0.20 per minute, or a maximum flat rate of RM18 for 90 minutes or more per day - yep, you can spend the entire day, from 11am through 1am, crashing on Headspace's couches and chairs for a worry-free RM18.

Bo All Day Dining, The LINC KL

By EDKL Writer A.A.

Set beside The LINC mall's centrepiece of decades-old, slender-branched trees, Bo All Day Dining is a restaurant that feels like the closest thing to a rainforest retreat in the city. But there's no monkeying around with the menu, populated with well-prepared creations.

Specialities include the rotisserie chicken, richly juicy-fleshed after being brined and air-dried for 36 hours before making its final journey into the French-built oven. It's certainly satisfying chicken, though the price might provide pause at RM28 for a quarter chicken and RM42 for half, inclusive nonetheless of a side salad that evokes a Caesar and a choice of sauce (chicken jus, garlic aioli, or basil mint pesto). Customers can also splurge on a truffled chicken jus for a surcharge of RM12, though it's not quite fragrantly earthy enough to merit the extra expense.

Atten-hut! Bo serves seven varieties of 10-inch wood-fired pizzas, of which Yes Sir might be the most enticing, topped with the raw meat lover's top temptation of luscious beef tartare, rounded out with jalapenos, capers, truffle paste, mozzarella and parmigiano reggiano for a capable pizza with enjoyable textures (RM45). Also available: Other pizzas with fun topping combinations like cured salmon with beetroot, onions and mentaiko paste.

Cocktail highlights showcase tropical intrigue: The Spice of Life is a sweet and spicy gin and tonic, fuelled by cinnamon, falernum and star anise (RM30), while the Kaya Tropicolada is a tiki treat that buoyantly blends white rum with pineapple and local kaya (RM30).

Among wines by the glass, the Outback Jack Shiraz is a well-balanced bet for meats and cheeses (RM22), while the Lagar de Benzana Rosado is pleasantly fruity enough to relish on its own (RM22).

Rikka Japanese Curry House, Kota Kemuning

By EDKL Writer A.A.

Cloud nine for Japanese curry fans: Rikka rolls out a robust range of curries, relying on classic powder bases produced by Tokyo's nearly century-old S&B Foods.

The curries strive to be rich and resonant, with ingredients in the powder that include (deep breath!) turmeric, coriander, fenugreek, cumin, orange peel, cinnamon, fennel, ginger, star anise, thyme, bay leaves, cloves, nutmeg, sage and cardamom.

Rikka personalises the curries by sauteing them with its own simmered mix of fruit pastes and vegetables, bringing out a natural sweetness to complement the spices. The curries are fine-tuned further with caramelised onions for the basic curry; with butter, tomatoes and yogurt for a butter curry; with shrimp shells, carrots and coconut milk for the ebi dashi curry; and with minced beef and raisins for a dried beef curry.

You can customise how fiery you want your curry to be, with levels of Mild, Standard, Level 1 Spicy and Level 2 Spicy. True to tradition, the curries won't be too punishing for Malaysian palates, even at the highest level.

All the curry rice options come with a soup and salad, costing from RM14 for a Vegetable Butter Curry Set to RM18 each for the Prawn Ebi Dashi Curry and the Dried Beef Curry - pretty reasonable suburban prices.

Curry chicken, pork and other seafood options are available too, as is curry udon; the combinations are more than extensive enough to contemplate regular visits for folks in this neighbourhood.

From rice dishes to rice wine: Pair your warming meal with a cooling bottle of Hakutsuru Nama (RM25).

Rikka Japanese Curry House

Open 1130am-230pm, 6pm-10pm; closed Tuesdays. Tel: 011-3327-9245

Granja La Catalana & Cachitos, Barcelona

Skip Granja La Catalana and search elsewhere for your fix of tapas and paella in Barcelona: Its people-watching location on Rambla de Catalunya is convenient, but it suffers from subpar jamon, rubbery octopus and greasy paella with seafood that's past its prime. Rubbing salt into the wound, there's definitely superior sangria to be found in KL.

Situated scarcely steps away on the same street, Cachitos enjoys brisk business but is barely a bit of a better bet. The fried egg is wreathed with delicious fried artichokes, but the squid is stubbornly bland while the paella is severely over-seasoned. Wash down your regret with two special sangrias, one laced with Veuve Clicquot, the other with cava, both artificial-tasting.
